Amentum is a Lot 1 key delivery partner within the Decommissioning and Nuclear Waste Partners (DNWP) Framework, a major Sellafield programme worth up to £4.6 billion and running for up to 15 years. The framework is focused on safely accelerating decommissioning, remediation and high‑hazard risk reduction across one of the most complex nuclear sites in the world.
Our nuclear team supports the front‑end design, engineering, technical leadership and delivery expertise required across the DNWP portfolio. We are looking for individuals with high‑value expertise from across regulated and comparable sectors to who can work collaboratively, embrace new challenges and contribute to the mission of safely and efficiently delivering Sellafield’s decommissioning and nuclear waste objectives.
About the Opportunity
The Asbestos Coordinator is responsible for ensuring the effective management of asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) across nuclear facilities and associated infrastructure in compliance with the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, HSE guidance, site licence conditions, and nuclear industry standards.
The role provides assurance that asbestos risks are identified, assessed, controlled, and communicated to protect employees, contractors, visitors, and the environment. The Asbestos Coordinator will maintain asbestos management systems, oversee surveys and remediation activities, support project teams, and ensure asbestos-related works are delivered safely within a highly regulated nuclear environment.
Employee will be expected to contribute to the delivery of social value in line with the DNWP framework, supporting positive outcomes for local communities. Voluntary engagement is supported, with up to 16 hours per full‑time equivalent allocated.
Key Responsibilities:
Ensure compliance with the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and all relevant nuclear industry requirements.
Review asbestos survey reports and ensure findings are incorporated into site management systems.
Ensure appropriate risk assessments are completed.
Coordinate asbestos refurbishment, demolition, management, and re-inspection surveys.
Liaise with UKAS-accredited asbestos consultancies and licensed asbestos removal contractors.
Plan and oversee asbestos remediation and removal projects.
Verify that all asbestos work is completed in accordance with approved method statements, risk assessments, and permits.
Conduct regular audits and inspections to assess asbestos management compliance.
Support the HP&S teams in investigating asbestos-related incidents, near misses, and non-conformances
Support the PM to produce reports, KPI data, and compliance updates for management and regulatory review.
Support internal and external audits, including regulatory inspections.
Act as the primary point of contact for asbestos-related matters across the site.
Provide technical advice to maintenance, engineering, projects, facilities, and operational teams.
Ensure relevant information is communicated to contractors and employees before work activities commence.
Participate in planning meetings to assess asbestos implications for maintenance and construction activities.
Deliver asbestos awareness guidance and information to site personnel.
Ensure personnel requiring asbestos-related training maintain appropriate competence levels.
Promote a strong safety culture and continuous improvement in asbestos management practices.
Support compliance with nuclear site licence requirements and organisational standards.
Ensure asbestos activities are appropriately controlled within areas where nuclear, radiological, or hazardous material risks exist.
Contribute to safe asset management and facility decommissioning programmes where applicable.
Essential Skills & Experience:
IATP or equivalent Asbestos Management training / good understanding of the CAR regs.
BOHS P402 – Surveying and Sampling Strategies for Asbestos in Buildings (or equivalent) qualified
BOHS P405 – Management of Asbestos in Buildings qualified (preferred).
Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Removal of Hazardous Waste (Construction) - Licensed Asbestos (preferred)
Experience managing asbestos risks within industrial, infrastructure, defence, energy, or nuclear environments.
Experience coordinating asbestos surveys, inspections, and removal projects as well as supporting regulatory compliance and audit activities.
Understanding of contractor management and permit-to-work systems.
Experience supporting the PM in producing compliance reports and management information.
Strong knowledge of asbestos legislation, guidance, and industry best practice.
Excellent understanding of asbestos surveying, risk assessment, and remediation processes.
Ability to interpret technical reports, drawings, and survey information.
Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and asbestos management database systems.
Commitment to health, safety, environmental, and nuclear safety standards.
