⚡ About Amber

Amber is an entirely new way of thinking about buying, banking and selling energy where home energy technology works to put money back in customers' pockets and accelerate the renewable energy transition.

We're an Australian headquartered company, where we are both an energy technology company and a utility providing energy directly to households and small businesses. In Australia (the world leader on rooftop solar and a 2-way energy grid), we've proven that the cheapest, fastest and most rewarding way to reach 100% renewables is to automate the growing wave of home batteries, EVs, and other smart energy devices.

Customers get direct access to the real-time electricity prices and the technology to shift energy usage to the times when cheaper renewables are available in the grid and export to the grid at times when the price they can be paid for it is highest.

We are a clear market leader in energy automation in Australia, and are now partnering with utilities across Europe to bring our technology to European markets and consumers.

We're backed by leading VCs in Australia and Europe, as well as impact-focused investors and world-leading energy companies.

\n

💻 About the Role

Our European Amber for Utilities team licenses our technology to energy retailers and utilities worldwide. Amber has cracked something genuinely rare - a technology that benefits consumers, utilities, and the grid all at once.

Amber for Utilities Europe (A4U) is live, major utility partnerships are underway, and we've reached an inflection point. We're ready to scale - and this role is the signal of that ambition. The Australian-based People team need a trusted operator in the European timezone to be the first on the ground People & Talent Partner for Europe.

At Amber, we believe that enabling a culture where everyone is set up to do the best work of their lives and feels connected and supported, is one of the most important things we can do to ensure our long-term success.

This is Amber's first dedicated people hire in Europe, and it's a hands-on, generalist role where no two days look the same. You'll be the go-to person for everything people and talent in our European team (<20 FTE with ambitions to double in the next 12 months) from running recruitment end-to-end, keeping day-to-day HR operations ticking, and making sure our employees here get the same great experience as those back in Australia.

You'll work closely with our Senior People Operations Manager and the broader AU People Ops team, taking European responsibilities off their plate and owning them locally. That means getting across UK and European employment law, adapting our people processes for a new market, and being the first port of call for managers and employees on the ground.

This role is for someone who loves getting stuck in, is comfortable switching between a hiring brief and an HR query in the same afternoon, and takes real pride in making things run smoothly. If that sounds like you, we'd love to hear from you.

👉🏽 Responsibilities

People Operations

  • Be the first person managers and employees trust for day to day HR queries, from leave questions and payroll queries to performance conversations and engagement ideas.
  • Facilitate onboarding and off boarding so every joiner and leaver has a great experience.
  • Research and apply UK and European employment law; know when to bring in external advisors.
  • Support Leaders through coaching conversations to guide on performance, engagement and team dynamics.
  • Manage employee relations matters end-to-end, including formal performance improvement processes, disciplinary procedures, and investigations, following local legal requirements.

  • Respond to ad hoc people related queries via Inbox and Slack.
  • Benchmark and manage local compensation and benefits, including pension and private health providers, and support managers through comp conversations.
  • Keep our HRIS (Rippling) up to date and well-managed for the European team.
  • Create and maintain process documentation so employees and managers can self-serve where possible.
  • Develop and maintain workplace policies that meet local legal requirements.

Recruitment

  • Own end-to-end recruitment for European roles, from scoping the brief with hiring managers through to offer.
  • Manage job postings, keep the ATS up to date, and ensure a smooth candidate experience throughout including giving thoughtful feedback. We want people to feel respected even if they’re not the right fit for now.
  • Build strong relationships with hiring managers so you understand their team needs before roles even open up.
  • Partner with the AU team to make sure European hires align with Amber's culture and standards.
  • Engage and coordinate recruitment partners or specialist agencies when needed.
  • Contribute to building Amber’s employer brand in the European market.

Culture & Community

  • Partner with managers to run events and create moments that help build connection across the European team.
  • Help run our employee engagement programme locally, listening, acting, and closing the loop.
  • Build strong relationships with managers and employees, bridging the gap between European and AU teams.
  • Pitch in on broader People Ops projects as they come up.

🎯 Key Requirements

  • A solid mid-level generalist People Ops, HR, or People & Talent role, you're mid-level and ready to take on a stand-alone regional role.
  • A working knowledge of UK employment law with proven experience managing formal ER processes end-to-end in a UK or European context.
  • Proven ability to hold coaching conversations with managers, on performance, engagement, or team dynamics, with empathy and confidence.
  • Experience contributing to people process improvements, such as performance management cycles, engagement programmes, or onboarding frameworks.
  • Comfortable engaging with and supporting senior and executive-level stakeholders, you know how to adapt your style and earn trust upwards.
  • Decisive but collaborative, you're able to make a call when needed, while bringing people with you and knowing when to sense-check.
  • Strong communicator, clear, warm, and professional in writing and in person.
  • Organised and detail-oriented, you can juggle competing tasks without dropping the ball.
  • Hands-on recruitment experience, you've run and enjoy managing full hiring processes across different functions (ideally a mix of technical, product and commercial).
  • Experience managing an HRIS and/or ATS from the back-end.
  • Comfortable working cross-functionally and building trust with managers and employees at all levels.

Nice to Haves

  • Experience hiring technical roles such as software engineers or product managers.
  • The curiosity to get up to speed on EU jurisdictions.
  • Prior experience at a start-up or scale-up, you know what it's like to build things as you go.
  • Familiarity with Rippling (our HRIS) and Lever (our ATS).
  • An interest in technology, energy, or sustainability.

💚 What you’re good at:

  • You’re a people person - you’re empathetic, you care about employee and manager problems, and people feel they can trust you
  • You’re an excellent communicator - you know the right words and tone to use based on the circumstances
  • You’re a problem-solver - you embrace challenges, think on your feet and work strategically to find solutions
  • You’re analytical - you love measuring success and finding out the why, and you’re detail-oriented
  • You’re persistent - you will be working in a fast-paced and changing environment, often faced with hurdles to jump, but you adapt well to change and can deal with pressure

🎉 Benefits

  • Compensation: 60,000 to 80,000 GBP per year (depending on experience)
  • Be part of a growing technology start-up shaping the future of household renewable energy use
  • Part of a global team of over 220 people across energy, technology, marketing, and operations
  • Flexible working hours & remote working

  • Annual Learning & Development budget
  • Annual company conference in Melbourne, Australia - flights & accommodation paid for
  • External Employee Assistance Plan for mental health support
