ALCOSAN is committed to providing wastewater treatment services 24 hours a day, seven days a week. From our Board of Directors to our Executive Director, leadership and staff; we work to enhance the community’s quality of life and safety by protecting our rivers and streams. After 60 years of continued design, construction and operations of the sewer system and treatment plant, we now have 400 plus employees serving residential, commercial and industrial customers in 83 communities throughout Allegheny County.

Position Summary

The Security Guard is responsible for providing physical security measures to protect organizational assets, employees, visitors, contractors, and facilities.

Job Duties

  • Essential Functions:

    • Provides physical security presence at assigned post.
    • Enforces access control procedures.
    • Monitors video surveillance cameras.
    • Performs visitor reception duties including identification checks and visitor credentialing verification.
    • Performs scheduled patrols and building security checks to identify safety hazards, security concerns and unauthorized activity.
    • Completes security inspections and lock up procedures.
    • Responds to alarm notifications and investigates disturbances.
    • Maintains adherence to visitor management, visitor screening, and facility access procedures.
    • Documents daily activities and irregularities. Initiates Incident reports as needed.
    • Conducts weekly tests of the emergency evacuation alarm system.
    • Provides transportation, as needed.
    • Traffic control.
    • Serves as a first responder to security incidents, emergencies and safety related situations.

  •    Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge / Abilities

Extensive / Considerable knowledge of:

  • Using all tools, equipment and materials of trade.
  • Microsoft 365

 

Ability to:

  • Perform multiple security rounds during assigned shift.
  • Document all incidents electronically.
  • Visually monitor surveillance camera(s) and communicate issues/concerns.
  • Execute situational awareness
  • Operate security vehicles during tour of duty.
  • Demonstrate integrity and professional ethics.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive personnel and security information.
  • Resolve conflicts through de-escalation strategies.
  • Make sound decisions in emergency situations.
  • Identify and respond to threats and vulnerabilities

Minimum Education Level Required

High School Graduate or GED.  Criminal Justice degree is preferred.

Minimum Experience Required

At least one year of security, law enforcement or military experience. A degree in Criminal Justice may be substituted for experience.

Required Certifications / Licenses

  • Valid Driver’s License. 
  • CPR, AED, First Aid, and OC Spray Certifications must be obtained within a reasonable amount of time. 
  • Act 235 Certification is preferred.

ALCOSAN’s 59-acre treatment plant is one of the largest such facilities in the Ohio River Valley. ALCOSAN is a great place to work, therefore, turnover has historically and continues to remain very low. On average, 10 to 15 employees are hired per year mostly for entry-level plant or office positions. Hundreds of applications are received every year, and even more remain in the applicant database. ALCOSAN currently employs more than 400 people, with about 30 percent of them designated as salaried, including directors, managers, first-line supervisors and other professionals such as engineers. ALCOSAN also employs guards who are members of the General Teamsters, Chauffeurs & Helpers Local 249. The rest of ALCOSAN’s workforce are members of the Utility Workers Union of America Local 433. Most of ALCOSAN’s employees work Monday through Friday with the Operations Department and Security personnel working a rotating shift schedule.
