Full job description

Are you ready to be a vital part of electrifying Alaska's future? At Alaska Village Electric Cooperative, we're on a mission to light up the Last Frontier. We're in search of a Maintenance Technician/Welder who is ready to embark on a remarkable journey, is dependable, knowledgeable, self-motivated, resourceful, likes to travel, and is adventurous enough to take on rural Alaska.

Alaska Village Electric Cooperative (AVEC) stands as a unique electric generation and distribution cooperative, serving 59 communities across Alaska. Our operation spans 46 small, isolated grids relying on a mix of diesel, wind, and solar generation to power 11,513 meters and maintain 515 miles of distribution line.

As a Maintenance Technician/Welder at AVEC you'll play a pivotal role in the member-driven service we provide and you will be asked to perform the duties of a Maintenance Technician but with a specialty in welding. The work of a Maintenance Technician/Welder involves organizing, directing, and performing construction tasks necessary to supply electrical energy to these remote villages via diesel generation and distribution systems. Each day will present new challenges and opportunities, allowing you to engage in diverse tasks such as major overhauls, repairs, preventive maintenance, and improvising temporary replacements. While traveling to our different communities, Maintenance Technicians instruct Power Plant Operators in equipment use, safe practices, and maintenance during field operations. As part of the traveling field staff, you are the ones that our Members see so there is much value to maintaining good relations with the member-owners and village councils and building their understanding and confidence in AVEC's value, mission and goals.

The Maintenance Technician/Welder position will travel approximately 80% of the year. While traveling with AVEC, you will get to enjoy world class fishing and hunting during the hours that you aren't working and will get to see parts of Alaska that most Alaskans don't even get to see.

The successful candidate will be responsible for welding, fabricating, and repairing metal structures and equipment. This position requires a strong understanding of welding techniques, blueprints, and safety standards.

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience as a welder.
  • Certification in welding from an accredited institution is preferred.
  • Experience in diesel generation systems or similar technical fields.
  • Ability to adapt to changing tasks and environments in remote locations.
  • Self-motivation and a responsible work ethic for field operations.

Rewards: Pay and benefits include autonomy in field operations, pay starting between $32.42 to $37.20 per hour and is dependent upon experience. 401K with employer match, Retirement Pension Plan (Defined Benefit, Employer paid pension). Paid leave starting at 21 days per year. We also offer 8 paid Holidays plus 2 Floating Holidays and a Birthday.

Other benefits include Medical and RX, Dental, Vision, Health Savings Account or Flexible Spending Account, Life Insurance, and Short- and Long-term disability.

Ready to Power Alaska's Future?

The next step is to complete our short online application.

AVEC is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, or protected veteran status and will not be discriminated against based on disability. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating a workplace where everyone can shine as brightly as the Northern Lights.
