As part of the Government’s reset of the science, innovation and technology system, on 1 July 2025, AgResearch, Manaaki Whenua – Landcare Research, Plant & Food Research, and Scion merged to form the New Zealand Institute for Bioeconomy Science, trading as the Bioeconomy Science Institute.

This position sits under the current AgResearch group of the Bioeconomy Science Institute.

Kōrero mō te tūranga | About the role

 

The Senior Technician will be responsible for planning, contributing to, and overseeing data and sample collection for genetics and genomics projects (sheep, cattle and deer) under the overall direction of science project leaders. This role requires someone who can work independently, or in a team locally and remotely, can plan and undertake data and sample collection involving handling of animals, has the ability to curate data with excellent data quality control measures for inclusion in varied analysis. The work involves original thought, innovation, problem-solving and communication.

 

This full time role is based at our Invermay campus however, due to its strong focus on data and sample collection from breeders’ properties, will involve significant travel throughout New Zealand over the course of the year.

Ōpūmanawa | About you

 

  • A tertiary qualification in animal science, genetics, or a relevant science discipline and/or at least five years’ relevant experience, ideally in a research or stud breeding setting.
  • Advanced sheep and cattle handling skills are essential, with proven experience in research or commercial environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently plan and lead fieldwork involving livestock and technology deployment.
  • Experience supervising or mentoring technical employees and coordinating field-team activities.
  • Strong data-management skills, including Excel proficiency and experience with data QC. Experience with R is an advantage.
  • Ability to travel and work away from home for extended periods during intensive data-collection phases. 
  • High level of physical fitness suitable for fieldwork.
  • Experience with safe and effective use of chemicals and field/lab equipment.
  • Ability to work under pressure during peak periods, and adapt to seasonal workflow changes.
  • Have a valid driver’s licence.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds including farmers, breeders, industry partners and scientists.
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, reliable work.
