POSITION SUMMARY:
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Education Coordinator position is responsible for the education and early childhood development portion of the Head Start Program Performance Standards under the direction and supervision of the Education Manager.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Early Childhood Education knowledge of local resources, languages and customs is helpful.
Certified (or ability to obtain certification within six months of employment) in Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) as a Reliability Observer.
Certified (or ability to obtain certification within twelve months of employment) in Teaching Pyramid Observation Tool for Preschool (TPOT) and as a Teaching Pyramid Infant Toddler Observation Tool (TPITOS) Observer.
Ability to effectively present verbal and written information to a broad group of people, including staff and community members at every level.
Ability to write reports and business correspondence.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general health journals and technical procedures.
Some Bilingual fluency helpful (English/Spanish).
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts and percentages.
Ability to produce and interpret graphs, charts, spreadsheets and other mathematical reports.
Ability to relate well and maintain effective working relationships with staff, children, parents and other agencies.
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions as well as exercise professional judgment in evaluating before making recommendations and/or decisions and maintain all information in strict confidence.
Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
This position will have intermediate to advanced knowledge of programs maintained and used by the organization, including, but not limited to, Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Assists in the implementation of the program School Readiness Goals.
Support teachers by providing the foundation materials for courses and giving constructive feedback on how teachers are implementing those materials.
Works closely with management to assure adequate classroom supplies and equipment are available to staff and that schedules are appropriate for young children.
Works closely with other staff, parents, managers/coordinators and/or consultants to support arrangements for identification, referral, parent permission, and confidentiality of records, evaluation and individual program planning for children with special needs.
Maintains up-to-date knowledge of Head Start Performance Standards including specific knowledge of the education and disabilities portions of the Standards.
Assists to oversee and participate in the screening, re-screening and follow-up for disabilities services.
Follows the state and federal regulations pertaining to child abuse and neglect, and maintains strict confidentiality of all information.
Assists in the assessment process and follow up to assure that the special needs of each child with disabilities are met.
Supports the collaboration of early childhood education staff to facilitate the integration of mental health and disabilities activities in the classroom curriculum.
Assists as appropriate in the identification of children with potential health, mental health or disabilities concerns.
Assists teaching staff in understanding and interpreting child observation data and establishing appropriate child goals based on knowledge of child development.
Assists managers and teaching staff with transition of Head Start children to kindergarten as well as children transitioning into Head Start.
Assists in ensuring all classrooms are in compliant with Maryland Office of Child Care licensing requirements.
Understands, generates and documents in-kind and other allowable costs applied toward the non-federal share requirement.
Attends all workshops and meetings as deemed necessary by the immediate supervisor.
Attends all required staff and parent meetings and activities.
Expected to be knowledgeable of the regulations associated with prevention of occupational disease and injury, including the exercise of universal precautions and the prevention of contamination.
Positively promotes Head Start in the community.
Maintains strict confidentiality with respect to Head Start children, families and staff in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Becomes thoroughly familiar with YMCA Employee Handbook: Human Resources Policies and Procedures, YMCA Head Start Operations Manual and all other YMCA HS handbooks, manuals and resources and adheres to them.

Minimum requirement is a bachelor degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or other closely related fied
Teaching experience required
Approval by Office of Child Care as a qualified Preschool or Infant/Toddler Teacher; Director qualified preferred.
2 years experience in working with children and families, experience working with low-income clients preferred
