Lead Specimen Processor (Tuesday - Saturday, 9:30 PM to 6:00 AM)

About this role
The Specimen Processor – Lead will work with cytology, histology, and molecular microbiology specimens. Experience in medical terminology and data entry is preferable. Specimen Processor lead will perform all specimen processing duties as well as manage daily workflow, ensure appropriate staff training, and handle key communications for the department.
Please note, the hours for this position are: Tuesday - Saturday; 9:30 PM to 6:00 AM (Night Shift)
Responsibilities
Receive and Process Specimens
• Receive and verify incoming patient specimens against requisitions and LIS orders.
• Perform specimen accessioning in the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
• Confirm patient identifiers, specimen labeling, collection date/time, and test orders.
• Evaluate specimens for acceptability according to laboratory policies.
• Process specimens by aliquoting, labeling, and preparing samples for analysis.
• Maintain specimen integrity through proper handling, storage, and transport.
• Prioritize STAT, timed, and critical specimens.
• Route processed specimens to appropriate testing departments or reference laboratories.
• Perform quality control and documentation required for regulatory compliance.
• Verifying patient insurance and confirming ICD-10 diagnosis code compliance before accessioning.
• Maintain Accessioning minimum productivity requirements.
Clean and maintain work area and lab equipment
• Maintain accurate records in accordance with CLIA, CAP, HIPAA, OSHA, and laboratory policies.
• Assist with inventory management and routine maintenance of processing equipment.
• Organize Lab specimen storge and supplies.
Trouble shooting specimen issues
• Communicate specimen issues with client services staff, couriers, and laboratory personnel.
• Document and resolve specimen discrepancies following established procedures.
• Assist all technical lab staff and leadership with additional duties as needed.
Additional Job Functions:
- Participate in meetings.
- Attend staff meetings and applicable training.
- Complete specimen projects.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Previous healthcare or laboratory experience preferred but not required.
- Ability to learn laboratory specimen handling procedures.
