Chair for the Department of Communication Sciences and Oral Health - Communication Sciences & Oral Health

The Chair for the Department of Communication Sciences and Oral Health (CSOH) oversees undergraduate degrees in Communication Sciences and Dental Hygiene, an online master’s degree in Education of the Deaf, and a master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology (with two distance venues with a focus on health care and school-based settings as well as a traditional on-campus program). Also offered are post-baccalaureate certificates in Bilingual Speech-Language Pathology and Deaf and Hard of Hearing. The PhD program offers emphasis options in Health Studies or Special Education. Housed in the College of Health Sciences, the department has over 25 full-time tenured, tenure-track, and clinical faculty members who work together alongside 10 staff members to support the missions of the programs, department, and university. The Chair supports faculty member engagement in a variety of research and teaching efforts, as they also provide clinical supervision in our three clinics (the Dental Hygiene Clinic and Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic on the Denton campus and the Stroke Center on the Dallas campus). Additional responsibilities include managing all personnel, budgets and facilities, curricular issues including accreditation, student issues, and serving as an internal and external liaison for the department.

Specific responsibilities include:

• Guides development and implementation of long- and short-term departmental goals, including potential program/department growth

• Formulates and allocates the department budget in an equitable manner

• Facilitates interprofessional education across the College, University, and community

• Promotes inter-campus communications

• Assures that accreditation requirements are achieved

• Approves new faculty and staff appointments; mentors faculty and staff

• Finds or creates core faculty development opportunities

• Contributes to the department through teaching, research and service activities

• Guides Program Directors in each program to:

  • Create program-specific goals

  • Assign faculty workload/administrative tasks according to university policy

  • Supervise professional and administrative staff

• Supervises and provides oversight of staff, graduate assistants, and student employees

• Promotes the department to external communities

• Seeks external funds for program development

• Contributes to the planning of and provides resources for marketing of departmental programs

• Communicates with departmental alumnae

Preferred Qualifications

• Demonstrated success in curricular and programmatic innovation
• Experience with national program accreditation
• Experience cultivating faculty excellence and student success
• Strong record of scholarly achievement and mentoring
• Proven ability to lead inclusively and collaboratively with diverse faculty, staff, and

students

• Strategic marketing and community engagement experience

Minimum Qualifications

• An earned doctorate in communication disorders, speech-language pathology, deaf education, health sciences (with dental hygiene focus), or related discipline
• Qualifications for appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor with tenure

• At least three years of academic administrative or leadership experience
