JOB SUMMARY


The Customer Service Intern will assist front office and patient service teams with non-clinical customer service and administrative activities that support positive patient experiences. Student interns will help welcome visitors, provide general information, assist with office organization, support administrative projects, and observe patient service operations in a healthcare setting.

Customer Service Interns will gain exposure to healthcare administration, patient relations, customer service, and community engagement while exploring careers within the healthcare industry.


PROGRAM OVERVIEW


The Watts Healthcare Center Summer Internship Program provides high school students with hands-on career exploration opportunities within a professional healthcare environment. Interns will work alongside experienced healthcare professionals while learning workplace expectations, communication skills, and industry-specific practices.

This position is designed to connect students to Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways while developing skills in customer service, communication, healthcare administration, organization, teamwork, and professional workplace readiness.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Interns will learn to:

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Customer Service Support

  • Welcome patients, visitors, and community members in a professional and friendly manner.

  • Assist with directing visitors to appropriate departments and service areas.

  • Provide general information regarding clinic services and programs.

  • Support a positive and welcoming environment for patients and families.

Front Office Operations Support

  • Assist staff with organizing front desk materials and resources.

  • Help prepare patient information packets and educational materials.

  • Support office organization and daily operational activities.

  • Observe front office workflows and patient service processes.

Administrative & Clerical Support

  • Assist with filing, scanning, copying, and organizing documents.

  • Support data entry and administrative projects.

  • Help maintain organized office records and supplies.

  • Assist with preparing materials for meetings and department activities. .

Patient Experience & Community Engagement

  • Learn about patient-centered care and customer service best practices.

  • Support patient satisfaction initiatives and community outreach efforts.

  • Assist with distributing informational materials and resources.

  • Observe how healthcare teams work together to meet patient needs.

Career Exploration & Professional Development

  • Participate in workplace learning experiences and career readiness activities.

  • Learn about educational pathways leading to healthcare administration and customer service careers.

  • Observe professionals working in healthcare support and patient services roles.

  • Develop communication, teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving skills.

Quality & Professional Standards Awareness

  • Learn the importance of patient privacy and confidentiality.

  • Follow workplace procedures and professional conduct expectations.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Currently enrolled in Compton Unified School District.

  • Preferred Junior or Senior standing.

  • Preferred CTE EMR pathway student or rising CTE pathway student.

  • Interest in healthcare, science, biotechnology, or public health careers.

  • Demonstrates responsibility, professionalism, and dependability.

  • Strong communication and organizational skills.

  • Positive attitude and willingness to learn.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff and peers.

Prior to internship start date, selected students will need to demonstrate:

  • CPR Certification

  • Current TB Clearance (within the last 6 months):

    • TB Skin Test (PPD), or

    • TB QuantiFERON-TB Gold (QFT) blood test

  • Chest X-ray (required only for students with a history of a positive PPD or QuantiFERON-TB Gold test; must be completed within the last year)

  • Immune Titers:

    • Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) IgG

    • Varicella (Chickenpox) IgG

    • Hepatitis B Surface Antibody

  • Immunization Records:

    • Tdap

    • COVID-19 vaccination (until further notice)

    • Current seasonal influenza (flu) vaccination

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Student interns will work within reception, front office, patient services, and administrative areas of Watts Healthcare Center. Interns may spend time assisting with office operations, greeting visitors, organizing materials, and supporting customer service initiatives. Duties may include standing, walking, organizing materials, operating basic office equipment, and interacting with patients, families, and staff. All interns will work under the supervision of Customer Service personnel and must adhere to workplace safety, confidentiality, and professional conduct standards.
