About this role
We’re seeking digital, web, and product design experts. You'll work on production-grade design systems used to evaluate AI design tools - building them, implementing them in code, and testing how well AI systems ingest and reproduce them. Depending on your track:
Digital Design track: Build complete design systems in Figma: tokens (color, type, spacing, radius), component libraries with variants and states, and golden screens composed exclusively from library components.
Product Design track: Envision product designs from scratch, implementing/using existing design systems, maintaining strict adherence to the design systems.
Engineering track: Implement design systems as coded component libraries: React, Storybook (v8), token pipelines (e.g., Style Dictionary), and variant patterns (e.g., CVA)
What you'll do
Prompt an AI model to generate and refine design work from a brief across multiple turns
Evolve the underlying design system: a refined color ramp, type scale, spacing and radius tokens, and component treatment the whole asset follows
Evaluate each output on design-system coherence, visual quality, and fit to the brief, and flag where adherence breaks
Compare outputs, pick the stronger one, and write the rationale and reproduction prompt to support your expert judgement
Vote and rank preferences to help train models on what a cohesive, high-taste design system looks like
Who you are:
4+ years building or implementing design systems professionally (in-house design systems team, agency, or design-engineering role)
You have personally built and owned a token-based system (color ramps, type scales, spacing and radius tokens, components with variants and states), not just consumed one
Sharp eye for adherence: you notice when a corner radius, casing rule, or spacing value drifts from spec
Structured, specific creative direction grounded in design-systems principles, and clear prompts that direct AI tools across multiple turns
Comfortable with AI design tools (Claude, Figma AI features, etc.) or eager to work at that frontier
Available for async, remote contract work with quick turnarounds, available to start immediately
TasteMakers is committed to building a diverse community of designers and makers. We encourage applications from designers of all backgrounds who share our commitment to exceptional craft and genuine taste.
We're seeking digital, web, product, and interactive design experts to work at the frontier of AI-generated design — directing it, pushing it further, and holding it to the standard you'd hold your own work to. We operate with various tracks:
Design Systems: Build and evolve production-grade token systems — color, type, spacing, radius, components with variants and states — and direct AI work that has to live inside them. Figma-native, design-engineering (React, Storybook, token pipelines), and product design flavors all sit here.
Product & Web Design: Assess website and web app design on aesthetics, UI/UX, and technical execution. Compare directions, pick the stronger one, say why.
Craft & Critique: Work across the full range of mediums — sites, app interfaces, decks, editorial, branding, data viz — briefing an AI model and separating genuine craft failures from matters of taste.
Interactive & Game Design: Evaluate quality across websites, web apps, and games, and articulate what makes an interactive experience strong rather than merely competent. Open at junior and senior levels.
What you'll do
Prompt and direct an AI model across multiple turns to generate and refine design work from a brief
Evaluate outputs on visual quality, craft, and fit to the brief — and be specific about where they break down
Where the work is system-driven, evolve the underlying system so the whole asset stays coherent
Compare directions, pick the stronger one, and write the rationale and reproduction prompt behind your judgement
Vote and rank preferences to help train models on what genuine taste looks like
Who you are
A working designer or design engineer in product, web, digital, interactive, or game design — 3+ years for evaluation-focused tracks, 4+ for design systems, 5+ for craft and critique. Junior interactive/game designers with 1-4 years are welcome to apply to that track.
You can say precisely why one design is better than another, in clear language, without hiding behind jargon
Sharp eye for craft — spacing, hierarchy, typography, alignment — and for adherence, when a radius, casing rule, or type step drifts from spec
Comfortable reasoning about design expressed in code (HTML, CSS, tokens); React or Figma variables a plus
For design systems: you've personally built and owned a token-based system, not just worked inside one
Structured, specific creative direction and clear prompting that can steer an AI tool across multiple turns
Comfortable with AI design tools (Claude, Figma AI features, etc.) or eager to work at that frontier
Available for async, remote contract work with quick turnarounds, available to start immediately
