Warehouse | Swing/Graveyard Shift
Schedule: Monday–Thursday | 3:30 PM–2:00 AM

POSITION SUMMARY

The Hardwood Veneer Grader is responsible for grading and separating hardwood veneers and Import Core (also known as Lauan) according to ANSI, HPVA, States Industries proprietary, and other applicable grading standards.

This position plays an important role in ensuring incoming veneer meets established quality expectations. The Grader identifies material that does not meet grade requirements and communicates concerns to the Hardwood Veneer Purchasing Manager so the material can be evaluated and a supplier claim initiated when appropriate.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Read, understand, and apply HPVA, ANSI, proprietary, and other applicable veneer grading standards.
Grade and separate hardwood veneers and Import Core/Lauan according to established quality and grade requirements.
Accurately report grading orders in D365.
Print veneer tickets based on grade and quantity.
Identify the tight and loose sides of veneer grain.
Mark veneer loads according to grade using established unit striping requirements.
Maintain expected grading productivity, including the ability to grade approximately 1,500 pieces of hardwood veneer or Import Core/Lauan.
Maintain accurate running and total veneer counts throughout the grading process.
Print load tickets from D365.
Identify material that does not meet expected grade or quality standards and promptly communicate concerns to the Hardwood Veneer Purchasing Manager.
Assist with inventory counts, inventory discrepancies, and problem-solving as needed.
Safely perform work in warehouse areas with active forklift and mobile-equipment traffic.
Assist in other areas of the department as business needs require.
Support the team in achieving established Safety, Quality, and Production goals.
Maintain an organized and safe work area.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

QualificationsQUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The qualifications below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to successfully perform the position.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Three to six months of experience handling hardwood veneer preferred.
Previous experience grading hardwood veneer or plywood preferred.
Experience safely and efficiently handling sheets of veneer with speed and care preferred.
Basic computer skills required.
Experience creating labels and working with computer-based inventory or production systems preferred.
Experience with D365 or a similar system is a plus.
Ability and willingness to learn applicable veneer grading standards and processes.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, understand, and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, maintenance instructions, grading standards, and procedure manuals.
Ability to learn and appropriately use terminology related to veneer grading.
Ability to understand and follow written and verbal work instructions.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Basic math skills, including the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers and units of measure.
Ability to accurately maintain running and total material counts.
Ability to read a tape measure and understand fractions.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to understand and carry out detailed written and verbal instructions.
Ability to identify problems, collect and evaluate information, establish facts, and draw reasonable conclusions.
Ability to identify quality or grading concerns and communicate them appropriately.
Ability to work independently to resolve routine issues while knowing when to escalate concerns.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Walk and stand for more than two-thirds of the work shift.
Frequently use hands and arms to handle, move, position, and grade veneer.
Reach with hands and arms throughout the workday.
Climb or balance for up to one-third of the work shift.
Stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl for up to one-third of the work shift.
Regularly handle and move sheets of veneer with appropriate speed and care.
Lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position works in an active mill and warehouse environment.

Required personal protective equipment (PPE), including hearing protection and safety glasses, must be worn as required.
Regular exposure to high noise levels, dust, forklift traffic, pedestrian traffic, and manufacturing equipment.
Work is performed in areas with frequent forklift and mobile-equipment activity.
Frequent exposure to outdoor conditions, including hot and cold temperatures.
Work is performed in a fast-paced production environment requiring consistent attention to safety, quality, and productivity.

WORK SCHEDULE

Monday–Thursday | 3:30 PM–2:00 AM

This position supports Warehouse operations on a Swing/Graveyard schedule. Regular and reliable attendance for the assigned schedule is an essential function of the position.
