About this role

Job DetailsJob Location: Charlotte, NC 28206Roof Above is excited to partner with Davidson College for a fifth year to welcome a Davidson Impact Fellow to our Communications & Education Team.

Ending homelessness is a bold and complex undertaking that requires heart, collaboration, and resources. But when we dream big, amazing things happen. Roof Above is a comprehensive homeless services provider serving over 1,400 people each day. We combat homelessness from all sides: with direct engagement via our street outreach teams and essential services at our Day Services Center, with temporary shelter at our three shelters, with permanent supportive housing at multiple campuses, and a myriad of other services that support our mission: to unite the community to end homelessness, one life at a time.

This year’s Impact Fellow will play a critical role on our Communications and Education Team, which is based at our Day Services Center campus (DSC). The DSC, a point of entry for many of the people we serve, is the front door to our basic services for individuals experiencing homelessness.

The Impact Fellow will be integral to implementing the Communications and Education Team’s 2025 – 2026 Strategic Plan and our commitment to invite, engage, and steward our broader community to invest in the work of ending homelessness. With guidance from team members, the Fellow will work across audiences, platforms, and media to create visual and written content, for internal and external communications, that is aligned with Roof Above’s mission. Primary projects and assignments will include assisting the team with the following:

Representation of work happening across Roof Above’s diverse campuses, using the best assets available and focusing on current priorities
Engagement of the Charlotte community in learning opportunities through presentations, small-group conversations, collaborations, and more
Production of Roof Above’s multiple communication projects, including four newsletters and other pieces aimed at donors and other key audiences
Support of Roof Above’s annual True Blessings fundraising luncheon
Creation of relevant social media content
Maintenance of a “story bank,” which will involve (with permission) interviewing and photographing neighbors, guests, tenants, volunteers, and staff so that their stories are ready to be shared across media as appropriate

This unique growth opportunity will immerse the Impact Fellow in challenging settings and require that they interact daily with individuals who are in crisis and who may have experienced significant childhood trauma, mental illness, substance use disorder, or involvement with the criminal justice system. The Impact Fellow will have their feet in two worlds — the busy, creative space of a professional communications and education team and the daily environment of the Day Services Center, filled with the people we serve, who are often on the margins of society.
