Focusing on individuals experiencing homelessness, Roof Above offers everything from street outreach to shelter to Rapid Rehousing to Permanent Supportive Housing. Roof Above’s services and programs reach over 1,400 individuals every day across ten campuses in Charlotte. Roof Above was born through the merger of Urban Ministry Center and Men’s Shelter of Charlotte in 2019

POSITION SUMMARY

The Custodial & Groundskeeper is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, sanitary, and welcoming environment across all organizational facilities and surrounding grounds. This position performs routine custodial services, grounds maintenance, light facility repairs, and supports special events and emergency response efforts. The role is essential in creating a positive experience for the individuals we serve, staff, volunteers, donors, and community partners.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Custodial Responsibilities

Clean and sanitize offices, restrooms/showers, dining areas, laundry areas, common spaces, and shelter dorm areas.
Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, and polish floors and surfaces.
Empty trash and recycling containers and dispose of waste properly.
Clean windows, doors, walls, and other building surfaces.
Restock restroom and janitorial supplies.
Follow cleaning schedules and infection control protocols.
Operate floor scrubbers, carpet extractors, buffers, and other custodial equipment.
Daily setup of seating and dining area at our Day Service Center
Set up and break down rooms for meetings, trainings, and special events.
Assist with moving furniture and equipment.
Plunge or snake toilets/drains as needed
Support emergency clean-up following weather events or other facility incidents.
Report maintenance issues, safety hazards, and damaged equipment promptly.

Groundskeeping Responsibilities

Maintain lawns, landscaping, flower beds, shrubs, and trees.
Mow, edge, trim, weed, mulch, and water landscaped areas.
Remove litter and debris from parking lots, sidewalks, courtyards, and outdoor spaces.
Perform seasonal grounds maintenance including leaf removal and snow/ice treatment when applicable.
Clean exterior entrances, walkways, loading docks, and outdoor gathering areas.
Assist with beautification projects to improve curb appeal.

QualificationsEDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED

High school diploma or GED preferred.
One year of custodial, groundskeeping, or facility maintenance experience preferred.
Commercial cleaning equipment experience preferred.
Knowledge of commercial cleaning techniques and equipment.
Basic landscaping and grounds maintenance knowledge.
Properly use personal protective equipment (PPE).
Safely handle cleaning chemicals according to SDS.
Ability to prioritize tasks and work independently.
Excellent customer service and communication.
Dependable with strong work ethic.
Nonprofit, shelter, healthcare, or hospitality experience is a plus.
Must possess a valid driver’s license and safe driving record.

Meet Physical Requirements

Lift up to 50 pounds.
Stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb ladders, and reach for extended periods.
Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather.
Operate power equipment and hand tools safely.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Individuals must be able to work with limited supervision, embrace a fast-paced environment, and be comfortable de-escalating behaviors with diverse individuals including persons with mental illness and substance use issues.
