Road & Rail Services is looking for a dependable, mechanically inclined Railcar Inspection Technician to join our West Point, Georgia, operation. This position combines hands-on railcar inspection and preparation with opportunities to use welding, fabrication, and mechanical repair skills.
If you have previous welding experience and enjoy working with tools, troubleshooting mechanical issues, and working outdoors, we want to hear from you. Railroad experience is helpful but is not required. Candidates with backgrounds in welding, fabrication, automotive repair, industrial maintenance, construction, manufacturing, or other skilled trades are encouraged to apply.
This is an active outdoor position. You will inspect railcars, identify damage or maintenance concerns, prepare equipment for vehicle transportation, and assist with repairs that can safely be completed at the facility.
What You'll Do
As a Railcar Inspection Technician, you will:
Inspect railcars for visible damage, wear, fatigue, and mechanical concerns
Identify components that need repair or replacement
Assist with basic railcar repairs and maintenance as assigned
Perform welding and fabrication work when qualified and required
Use welding equipment, grinders, cutting tools, and other hand or power tools as needed
Inspect completed work to help ensure repairs meet established safety and quality requirements
Clean and prepare railcar interiors for vehicle loading
Use backpack blowers, scrapers, and other equipment to remove debris and contaminants
Inspect, open, and close railcar end doors
Report railcar damage, equipment problems, and safety concerns to management
Maintain tools and equipment in safe working condition
Keep work areas organized and free of avoidable hazards
Follow company, customer, railroad, and applicable safety procedures
Complete additional inspection, cleaning, repair, and housekeeping duties as assigned
What We're Looking For
Successful candidates should have:
Previous welding experience strongly preferred
Experience with MIG, stick, or other welding processes is a plus
Mechanical, fabrication, maintenance, or repair experience is preferred
Experience safely using grinders, cutting tools, hand tools, or power tools is a plus
A valid state-issued driver's license
A strong commitment to workplace safety
The ability to follow written and verbal instructions
Dependable attendance and reliable transportation
The ability to work effectively as part of a team
A willingness to learn railcar inspection and repair procedures
Previous railroad experience is not required. We are willing to train dependable candidates who bring mechanical ability, welding experience, and a strong work ethic.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
This is a hands-on industrial position performed primarily outdoors. Candidates must be comfortable:
Working outside in heat, cold, rain, and changing weather conditions
Standing and walking for extended periods
Bending, reaching, stooping, and performing repetitive physical tasks
Climbing onto or around rail equipment as required
Working around moving equipment and an active rail operation
Wearing required personal protective equipment
Performing physical work throughout the scheduled shift
