R.J. Corman Railroad Services is seeking an Superintendent for our Derailment Division in Albany, NY.

Responsibilities: 

  • Assist with the general safe, efficient, profitable daily management of emergency and pre-set derailment operations of a single derailment operating division.
  • Maintain ongoing business relations with customers of derailment services within the assigned division market.
  • Supervise personnel and equipment in the performance of on-call wreck-site work, equipment repair, maintenance and readiness at the division shop, and other non-wreck general services for railroad customers.
  • Establish positive business relationships with divisional customers and assist in generating new and repeat business.
  • Propose job bids for approval and troubleshoot customer complaints associated with divisional services.
  • Assist with recruiting, selecting, placing, and arranging job training for division personnel.
  • Plan and schedule work to ensure readiness, mobilization, response time, and efficiency of operations.
  • Obtain appropriate permits for the movement of divisional equipment and ensure compliance with applicable travel requirements.
  • Utilize shop time efficiently for training, equipment readiness, and maintenance of buildings and grounds.
  • Enforce work, safety, and conduct rules and assist with disciplinary actions, performance evaluations, wage changes, and promotions.
  • Manage compliance with company policies, procedures, safety requirements, DOT regulations, billing, purchasing, equipment usage, and reporting requirements.
  • Manage labor, equipment, and operating costs within approved budgets.
  • Establish safe operating procedures and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local safety regulations.
  • Manage maintenance and repair programs for vehicles, machinery, and equipment.
  • Schedule personnel for non-wreck customer work while maintaining emergency response readiness.
  • Maintain divisional records and prepare weekly and monthly performance reports.
  • Ensure personnel records are current and complete.
  • Participate in annual goal setting and budgeting activities.
  • Keep the Regional Operations Manager informed of significant divisional issues, opportunities, and competitive activities.

Specialized or Technical Knowledge, or Education and Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience in the management of derailment operations, or other related experience in heavy equipment and recovery-type operations.
  • Three to five years of operator experience in derailment or similar recovery operations.
  • Experience with operations and scheduling activities, with emphasis on maintaining good employee relations.
  • Ability to train employees in derailment equipment operation.
  • Basic personal computer data entry and retrieval skills.
  • Experience with word processing and spreadsheet programs preferred.
  • Basic business math skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

Physical Requirements: 

 

  • Mobility to participate in frequent travel within the divisional market and to locations outside the market area.  
  • Ability to lift up to 100 pounds in the performance of duties.  
  • Ability to use radio and telephone communication equipment.  
  • Agility to navigate into confined spaces. 

Environmental Conditions: 

 

  • Performs duties in multiple environments, including office settings and outside wreck-site locations.  
  • Works in and around moving vehicles and equipment.  
  • Exposure to various weather conditions.  
  • Must wear appropriate PPE required for wreck-site visits.  
  • Extensive travel to wreck sites.
