About this role

R. J. Corman Railroad Services is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator in Wichita, KS. 
 

Responsibilities: 

  • Transport, operate, and service heavy equipment used in railroad derailment recovery.
  • Handle heavy steel chains, blocks, steel cables, and other recovery equipment.
  • Practice safe work habits and ensure proper PPE is used.
  • Safely drive, operate, and maintain CDL-A vehicles and equipment.
  • Perform equipment maintenance, cleaning, and setup.
  • Use hand and power tools, including cutting torches and welding equipment.
  • Perform manual labor such as digging, hammering, and material handling.
  • Follow DOT regulations, permits, and driving requirements.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Specialized or Technical Knowledge, or Education and Experience: 

  • Valid CDL-A license with no restrictions and manual endorsement highly preferred.
  • Valid DOT Medical Card highly preferred.
  • Knowledge of DOT regulations and safe vehicle operation.
  • Ability to operate or learn specialized equipment such as sidebooms, track loaders, excavators, vac trucks, and grapple trucks.
  • Experience with or ability to learn welding, cutting torch operations, and equipment maintenance.
  • Must pass a background check, drug screen, and physical capacity test.
  • Ability to work on-call 24/7 and travel frequently to job sites.

Physical Requirements: 

  • Lift up to 100 pounds maximum.
  • Frequently lift and/or carry objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Perform physically demanding work, including digging, hammering, and handling heavy materials.
  • Comfortable working at heights exceeding 25 feet on railroad cars and bridges.
  • Ability to work over or in water.

Environmental Requirements: 

 

  • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Available for frequent travel to job sites.
  • Must live within 45 minutes of the R.J. Corman shop.
  • Work in railroad recovery environments, including elevated locations, bridges, and areas over or in water.
  • Enjoy working outdoors.
