Permit Technician
Michael Baker International is seeking to hire a Permit Technician performs professional administrative support duties for the Encroachment Team. This position is responsible for receiving, reviewing, processing, and routing various types of permit applications, plans, and related documentation for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable codes and regulations. As the Permit Technician, you will ensure excellent customer service, provide technical guidance, coordinate permit activities, and supports internal and external stakeholders to maintain efficient permit processing.
Key Responsibilities:
- Receive, review, and evaluate permit applications and construction plans for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with building codes and regulatory requirements.
- Perform detailed pre-screening and final review of submittals; route residential and commercial plans for appropriate departmental review.
- Process and track plans in digital permitting systems; set up revisions, manage deferred submittals, and resolve permit system issues.
- Respond to inquiries regarding permit status, required documentation, and general procedures via phone, email, in person, and through Q-Flow.
- Calculate and assess various permit and plan fees accurately.
- Research and review data from systems
- Create and maintain administrative records, reports, and performance metrics.
- Process standard and complex encroachment permits (e.g., monitoring wells, paving, HPD cameras, kiosks, subdivision markers).
- Ensure timely and professional communication with applicants, internal teams, and external agencies to resolve issues and deliver excellent service.
- Support departmental goals and assist other team members during peak demand or urgent needs.
What You'll Need to Succeed:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Associate's degree in a related field may substitute for 2 years of required experience.
- Minimum 3 years of experience as a Permit Technician or related administration / customer service position.
- Strong analytical and organizational skills; able to manage multiple priorities and tasks efficiently.
- Excellent interpersonal communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to lead, mentor, and support a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency with office software (Word, Excel, Outlook) and permitting platforms.
- Ability to interpret and apply permit codes, regulations, and departmental procedures.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Proficiency in iPermits and ILMS (Integrated Land Management System).
- Experience with complex permit processing, encroachment permits, and customer-facing roles strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of Construction terminology and general code requirements.
Compensation:
The approximate compensation range for this position is $20.96 - $28.61 per hour. This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
