About this role

Concrete Materials Laboratory Technician

About Queens Carbon

Queens Carbon is developing next-generation low-carbon cement and supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) that reduce the carbon footprint of concrete while maintaining or improving performance. Our team combines scientific research with practical concrete testing to develop innovative construction materials for a more sustainable future.

We are looking for a motivated, hands-on Concrete Materials Laboratory Technician to join our growing R&D team. If you enjoy working with concrete, laboratory equipment, and physical testing, this is an excellent opportunity to build your technical skills while contributing to the development of new sustainable cement and concrete technologies.

Position Summary

The Concrete Materials Laboratory Technician will support the preparation, testing, and evaluation of cementitious materials, mortars, and concrete mixtures. The majority of the work is hands-on laboratory testing following ASTM procedures.

A typical day may include preparing aggregates, batching and mixing concrete, casting concrete specimens, measuring fresh concrete properties, conducting compression tests, recording results, and maintaining a clean, organized laboratory.

Previous concrete laboratory experience is preferred but not required. We are willing to train motivated candidates who have experience with construction materials, manufacturing, laboratory work, or related technical fields.

Responsibilities

  • Follow Queens Carbon safety procedures and maintain a safe laboratory environment.
  • Prepare aggregates, cement, mortar, and concrete mixtures according to ASTM and internal procedures.
  • Perform aggregate quality control before batching.
  • Batch, mix, and prepare concrete and mortar specimens.
  • Cast, label, cure, organize, and track laboratory specimens.
  • Perform fresh concrete testing including slump, air content, unit weight, and temperature.
  • Perform hardened concrete testing including compressive strength and other laboratory evaluations.
  • Operate laboratory mixers, compression machines, curing equipment, and other testing instruments.
  • Record testing data accurately using laboratory notebooks and Excel.
  • Clean, maintain, and organize laboratory equipment and work areas.
  • Assist scientists and engineers with research experiments and new product development.
  • Support additional laboratory projects as needed.

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow written procedures.
  • Comfortable performing physical, hands-on laboratory work.
  • Ability to safely and repeatedly lift, carry, and move buckets, weighing up to 50 pounds throughout the workday.
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong work ethic and willingness to learn.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.

Preferred

  • Associate degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Materials, Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related field.
  • Experience working with concrete, cement, aggregates, asphalt, construction materials, or similar industrial materials.
  • Experience in laboratory testing, quality control, manufacturing, or construction.
  • Familiarity with ASTM concrete testing procedures.
  • Experience operating concrete mixers, compression testing machines, curing equipment, or similar laboratory equipment.
  • ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician certification (or willingness to obtain after hire).

Don't meet every qualification? We'd still love to hear from you. If you're eager to learn and enjoy hands-on technical work, we encourage you to apply. Training will be provided for many of our specialized laboratory procedures.

Benefits & Compensation

  • Competitive hourly pay of $20–32/hour, depending on experience and certifications.
  • Competitive Paid Time Off (PTO).
  • Health, dental, vision, life insurance, and 401(k).
  • Equity in Queens Carbon.
  • Opportunities to learn advanced concrete and cement testing techniques.
  • Career growth within a fast-growing climate technology company.
  • Company swag.

What You'll Be Doing

During a typical week, you will:

  • Perform aggregate quality control.
  • Batch and mix concrete and mortar.
  • Cast cylinders, cubes, beams, and other test specimens.
  • Perform ASTM fresh concrete testing.
  • Run compression tests and other laboratory evaluations.
  • Organize and maintain curing rooms and specimen storage.
  • Record laboratory results and assist with data collection.
  • Help maintain a clean, safe, and organized laboratory.
  • Work alongside scientists and engineers developing new low-carbon cement technologies.
