Powers & Sons Construction is hiring a Superintendent to lead day-to-day field operations for projects across the Greater Chicago area. This position is responsible for coordinating subcontractors and trades, maintaining safe and organized jobsites, managing construction schedules, and delivering quality work from mobilization through closeout.
Founded in 1967, Powers & Sons is a third-generation, family-owned general contractor and construction management firm. Our portfolio includes commercial, education, healthcare, cultural, public-sector, and multifamily projects. We bring a practical commitment to safety, accountability, and the communities where we build.
The Opportunity
You will work closely with the Project Manager to turn the project plan into coordinated daily execution. We are looking for a field leader who plans ahead, communicates clearly, holds trade partners accountable, and addresses problems before they affect the next phase of work.
Responsibilities
- Lead daily site operations and coordinate subcontractors, trades, deliveries, equipment, and site logistics.
- Establish and enforce project safety expectations, conduct site observations, and ensure hazards and unsafe conditions are addressed promptly.
- Develop and maintain short-term look-ahead schedules aligned with the overall project schedule.
- Lead subcontractor coordination meetings, communicate priorities, and track commitments.
- Review drawings, specifications, approved submittals, and RFIs to identify conflicts and confirm field work meets project requirements.
- Coordinate architectural, structural, and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing work across trades.
- Monitor workmanship throughout construction and apply Powers & Sons’ Z-PRIDE approach through regular inspections, self-correction, and early resolution of deficiencies.
- Coordinate inspections, testing, and required approvals with the project team and applicable authorities.
- Maintain accurate daily reports, progress photos, manpower records, and documentation of field conditions.
- Partner with the Project Manager to address schedule risks, scope changes, material availability, and cost impacts.
- Coordinate punch-list completion, startup and commissioning activities, and project turnover.
- Provide clear direction and support to assigned field staff while maintaining professional relationships with owners, designers, and trade partners.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience leading commercial, institutional, or multifamily building construction as a Superintendent or comparable field leader; five or more years in a Superintendent role preferred.
- Experience coordinating multiple subcontractors and building systems through substantial completion and closeout.
- Strong understanding of construction sequencing, site logistics, drawings, specifications, and quality control.
- Ability to build practical work plans, identify constraints, and hold teams accountable for commitments.
- Working knowledge of construction safety requirements and the ability to lead a consistent site safety program.
- Clear communication, sound judgment, and accurate project documentation.
- Experience using construction management software for drawings, daily reports, RFIs, and punch lists. Procore experience preferred.
- Ability to work on-site at assigned Greater Chicago project locations.
Additional Experience We Value
- Ground-up construction and renovation experience.
- Experience coordinating union trade partners.
- Work in occupied facilities or on projects requiring phased construction.
- OSHA 30-hour Construction training.
- Relevant trade experience, apprenticeship training, or construction-related education. A four-year degree is not required.
