Chemist, Coatings Synthesis

Coating Synthesis Chemist supports coatings product development through a combination of hands-on laboratory work and technical office responsibilities. The role includes product synthesis, SAP master data management, technical support, cross-functional collaboration, and preparation of technical documentation for architectural and industrial markets.

Key Responsibilities:

With direction of a supervisor and/or mentor, chemists are expected to safely produce high quality lab work related but not limited to:

  • Preparation of chemical formulations and prototypes via synthesis or blending; Preparation of test articles using end customer processes; Testing chemical formulations, prototypes and test parts via chemical analyses, quality control testing, mechanical property testing and/or application testing; Lab work is typically related to new product/process development, product enhancement/process improvement, existing product support, raw material evaluations, plant support, customer formulation support, and/or technical assistance.
  • Assignments typically focus on a specific technology area with exposure to other areas, depending on organizational needs, performance, etc.
  • Create master data in SAP for new Coatings Products at select Manufacturing Sites following the global master data process in SAP.  This will include reviewing formulas, manufacturing instructions, inspection plans and all other pertinent information for accuracy prior to entry into SAP
  • Responsible for completing assigned synthesis related projects that will cover multiple coatings application areas including both architectural and industrial markets
  • Projects include developing new products, modifying existing products to meet the needs of our customers, and providing technical support to our customers as well as manufacturing support
  • This position will interface with Customers, Sales, Manufacturing, Technical Service, Procurement, and other synthesis groups
  • Generation of technical reports, invention disclosures, presentations, and product literature
  • Up to 10% travel to support customers and manufacturing is possible.

Requirements and  Qualifications

  • BS in chemistry with 0 to 2 years of synthesis in developing Alkyd, Saturated Polyester, Solvent borne Urethanes or Solution Acrylic for the coatings market
  • Good structure-property understanding
  • Innovative thinking and technical accomplishments and utilization of analytical tools, technical knowledge, data, and statistical tools to solve technical challenges and enhance chemistries and process development
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to work in a team environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Word, as well as SAP preferred
