About this role

Bankruptcy & Creditor Specialist – NJ location / hybrid - $80,000 - $95,000 commensurate with experience

NMEF is hiring a Bankruptcy & Creditor Specialist to join our portfolio servicing and asset recovery team. In this role, you'll manage bankruptcy cases involving commercial borrowers, safeguard NMEF's position as a secured creditor, and drive recovery outcomes across our equipment finance and lending portfolios. NMEF provides commercial equipment financing nationwide, serving a wide range of credit profiles through our broker-driven lending model.

We're looking for someone with solid grounding in bankruptcy law, creditor rights, commercial lending, secured transactions, and plan analysis. You'll act as the connective tissue between internal servicing teams, outside counsel, bankruptcy trustees, and borrowers as cases move through the process.

Key Responsibilities

  • Track and manage commercial bankruptcy filings that affect NMEF's equipment finance, lease, and loan portfolios.
  • Dig into Chapter 7, 11, and 13 filings — petitions, schedules, disclosure statements, and reorganization plans.
  • Assess how proposed plan terms affect NMEF's secured claims, collateral standing, and expected recovery.
  • Translate bankruptcy plan details for business stakeholders, flagging risks and recommending recovery approaches.
  • Negotiate terms including plan treatment, adequate protection payments, interest rates, claim classification, repayment schedules, and settlements.
  • Draft, review, and track proofs of claim, reaffirmation agreements, motions, objections, and other bankruptcy filings.
  • Work with outside counsel on contested matters, objections, litigation approach, and available creditor remedies.
  • Stay on top of court dockets, case status, and key deadlines via PACER and similar tracking tools.
  • Evaluate equipment collateral positions and recovery paths while staying compliant with bankruptcy and lending regulations.
  • Team up with Portfolio Management, Collections, Asset Recovery, Legal, and Operations to build account-level recovery plans.
  • Keep case notes, recovery projections, and portfolio reports current and accurate.
  • Spot patterns across the bankruptcy portfolio and suggest process changes to cut losses and boost recovery.

Required Skills & Abilities

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Legal Studies, Paralegal Studies, or a related field — or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • 3+ years working in commercial bankruptcy, creditor rights, asset recovery, commercial collections, legal support, or equipment finance servicing.
  • Solid grasp of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code and secured creditor protections.
  • Track record reviewing and interpreting bankruptcy plans and plan treatment.
  • Familiarity with commercial lending, equipment finance, secured transactions, and collateral recovery.
  • Strong analytical, negotiation, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Clear, confident communicator — written and verbal.
  • Comfortable with Microsoft Office and bankruptcy case management platforms.

Nice to Have

  • Background in equipment finance, leasing, commercial lending, banking, or specialty finance.
  • Working knowledge of UCC filings and secured lending documentation.
  • Direct experience with PACER, bankruptcy courts, trustees, and outside counsel.
  • Paralegal certification or other bankruptcy-related legal experience.
