Position Summary

The Welder (HVAC Piping) is a skilled craftsperson responsible for fabricating, welding, assembling, and installing high-quality piping systems for HVAC, refrigeration, hydronic, and related mechanical applications. This role specializes in precision welding on carbon steel, stainless steel, copper, and other alloys used in chilled water, hot water, steam, refrigerant, condensate, and gas lines. The ideal candidate excels in TIG (GTAW) and Stick (SMAW) welding processes, reads and interprets complex blueprints and specifications, ensures welds meet stringent quality and code requirements, and maintains the highest standards of safety and workmanship in fast-paced construction environments. Integrity, attention to detail, and commitment to producing leak-free, durable systems are essential.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Fabricate, fit, align, and install piping systems for HVAC and mechanical applications, including refrigerant piping, hydronic loops, steam/condensate lines, and support structures.
  • Perform high-quality welds using primarily TIG (GTAW) for precision root passes and filler on stainless steel/copper, and Stick (SMAW) for carbon steel and heavier applications; capable of multi-position welding (including overhead and vertical).
  • Read, interpret, and work from detailed blueprints, isometric drawings, P&IDs, specifications, and shop drawings to determine dimensions, layouts, materials, and welding sequences.
  • Measure, cut, bevel, thread, groove, and prepare pipe ends and fittings using saws, grinders, torches, threading machines, and other tools.
  • Set up, adjust, and maintain welding equipment, including machines, torches, regulators, and filler materials; perform pre- and post-weld preparations (cleaning, purging with inert gas for stainless/copper).
  • Inspect materials for defects; fit and tack components accurately to ensure proper alignment and joint preparation.
  • Conduct visual inspections and non-destructive testing (as qualified) on completed welds; perform pressure/leak tests and ensure compliance with ASME, AWS, and project-specific standards.
  • Install, repair, and modify valves, flanges, hangers, supports, and related piping accessories.
  • Identify and correct improper fit-ups, material issues, or installation deficiencies; collaborate with pipefitters, foremen, and other trades to resolve on-site challenges.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area; adhere to all OSHA, company, and site-specific safety protocols, including proper PPE usage and hot work procedures.
  • Document work as required, including weld logs, material traceability, and quality records.
  • Travel to project sites as assigned, including out-of-town jobs, overtime, weekends, and shift work when necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support project timelines and team success.

Qualifications & Requirements Required:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • 3+ years of verifiable experience in pipe welding, preferably in HVAC, mechanical contracting, refrigeration, or industrial piping systems.
  • Proficiency in TIG (GTAW) and Stick (SMAW) welding processes on carbon steel, stainless steel, and copper piping.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex blueprints, isometrics, and technical drawings.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and commitment to producing code-compliant, high-quality welds.
  • Knowledge of pipe fitting techniques, material properties, and welding symbols/codes (e.g., AWS D1.1, ASME B31.5/B31.9).
  • Physical ability to perform demanding work: lift/carry 50+ lbs., stand/walk for extended periods, climb ladders/scaffolding, work in confined spaces, and tolerate extreme temperatures or outdoor conditions.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation (subject to company policy).
  • Willingness to travel and work non-standard hours as project demands require.

Preferred:

  • Welding certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Welder, ASME Section IX qualified procedures for relevant processes/materials).
  • Experience with brazing copper refrigerant lines, orbital welding, or purge welding techniques.
  • Familiarity with HVAC-specific systems (e.g., VRF, chilled beams, boiler piping) and related codes (IMC, ASHRAE standards).
  • Prior experience in commercial/industrial construction or mechanical contracting environments.
  • OSHA 10/30 certification or other safety training.
