Position Summary

The HVAC Installer Apprentice works alongside Lead Installers and Installers on commercial construction, tenant improvement, renovation, and retrofit projects throughout Central, Northeast, and Southeast Ohio. This is an entry-level, learn-as-you-go role structured around MOAC’s four-year apprenticeship program. Apprentices develop foundational skills in HVAC equipment installation, ductwork, piping, and job site safety through hands-on field experience and formal training.Participants receive a company vehicle, uniforms, tools, a tablet, and ongoing formal training.

 

Standard schedule:

Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–3:30 PM, with overtime opportunities regularly available. Apprentices receive company-provided uniforms, tools, a tablet, and ongoing formal and on-the-job training.

 

Core Responsibilities

 Equipment & System Installation Support

  • Assist Lead Installers and Installers with the installation and replacement of commercial HVAC equipment including rooftop units, air handling units, fan coils, ductwork, and associated components
  • Support refrigerant and hydronic piping installation including material handling, layout assistance, and mechanical fitting assembly (threaded, flanged, and Victaulic/gasketed systems) under direct supervision
  • Help install roof curbs, curb adapters, duct transitions, and duct system modifications as directed
  • Perform material handling, staging, and organization to support crew productivity on construction and renovation job sites
  • Assist with equipment start-up and commissioning activities under the direct supervision of a qualified installer or project manager

Site & Trade Support

  • Assist with coordination and collaboration with other trades on the job site to keep work moving efficiently
  • Support accurate completion of daily work records, material logs, and field documentation via MOAC’s field service applications
  • Maintain a clean, organized job site and company vehicle throughout all phases of a project

Safety & Compliance

  • Adhere to all OSHA, MOAC, and site-specific safety policies at all times; apply PPE and LOTO procedures as required
  • Participate in job site safety meetings, toolbox talks, and MOAC safety training programs
  • Report safety incidents, near-misses, or hazardous conditions immediately to the Lead Installer, Project Manager, or VP of Construction

Required Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Enrollment in or completion of an HVAC vocational program, community college HVAC program, or registered apprenticeship preferred
  • 0–2 years of HVAC-related work or trade school experience; motivated career changers with relevant mechanical aptitude will be considered

Licenses & Certifications

  • Valid Ohio driver’s license with clean driving record required
  • OSHA 10 required (or must complete within first 90 days of employment)
  • EPA Section 608 certification a plus; support provided to obtain

Technical Skills & Attributes

  • Basic mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn electrical and refrigeration fundamentals
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and ask clarifying questions
  • Proficient or willing to learn digital work order systems, tablets, and field service mobile applications
  • Reliable, punctual, and committed to professional conduct in customer facilities

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work in diverse field conditions (rooftops, equipment rooms, confined spaces, all weather); climb, crawl, stoop, kneel; lift up to 75 lbs
  • Flexibility for overtime and occasional weekends
  • Must pass pre-employment background check and drug screening

Preferred Qualifications

  • HVAC vocational coursework or trade school certificate
  • Hands-on mechanical experience (automotive, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, or similar)
  • Bilingual a plus

Training & Development

MOAC’s apprenticeship experience is structured to grow your skills from day one. Apprentices receive a minimum of two weeks of formal training annually through manufacturer factory training, vendor and in-house continuing education, online resources, and on-the-job mentoring by senior technicians. MOAC provides tuition reimbursement for industry-related courses taken outside normal business hours and actively supports EPA certification and NATE exam preparation.

Apprenticeship Program

MOAC’s four-year HVAC Installer Apprenticeship is a structured program that combines hands-on field experience with formal classroom and manufacturer training. Apprentices progress through four periods of increasing skill and responsibility, with wage increases at each milestone. Program elements include:

  • Manufacturer factory training and product-specific certification courses
  • In-house skills training covering ductwork, piping, equipment installation, and start-up procedures
  • Online learning resources and industry continuing education
  • On-the-job mentoring by Lead Installers and Project Managers
  • Tuition reimbursement for industry-related courses taken outside normal business hours
  • Support for EPA Section 608 certification and OSHA 30 completion
