About this role

About Mercury

Mercury is a seed-stage software startup that enables utilities and data centers to exchange power capacity for load flexibility — unlocking additional power capacity for data centers while utilities to better utilize their existing infrastructure and capture load growth.

Our solution brings additional power capacity to existing and new-build datacenters, available in months instead of 5+ years for a typical interconnection. Mercury unlocks this power capacity via utility data center flexible capacity programs: including data center evaluation, technical integration, and ongoing dispatch & compliance monitoring. The platform is agnostic to, and integrates across data center flexibility solutions, including workload orchestration/GPU optimization, behind-the-meter storage and/or generation, and bring-your-own capacity solutions.

We are actively piloting Mercury with Duke Energy in the Carolinas, where we have enabled the first flexible data center capacity expansion project with real-world AI workloads. We’re establishing several other pilot programs with many of the largest US utilities, as well as a full-scale 100MW+ project with a "power first" data center partner, which is in the design phase and slated for launch in 2027.

Mercury is funded by Banyan Ventures, international energy conglomerates, AI & crypto specialists, as well as Powerhouse Ventures, the leading utility-backed VC. We're partnered with Joules Accelerator at Duke Energy, the Energy Innovation Center at Dominion Energy, and Google's AI for Energy Accelerator.

The Role

Mercury is hiring a VP of Data Center Solutions to lead GTM strategy and revenue generation for our data center business as we scale from zero to one. This is a deal-closing role with two commercial motions: 1) selling data center operators on Mercury's flex-capacity solution, so they can unlock additional power capacity from their utility without waiting years for new interconnection, and 2) acting as offtake for those data center operators that do not know how to monetize flexible power capacity, by buying that power capacity ourselves and selling it to flexible tenants.

You'll own the full sales cycle for both motions — from prospecting and qualifying data center accounts, through technical and commercial discovery, to negotiating and closing contracts with VPs of Infrastructure, heads of power/energy, and C-suite stakeholders. You'll partner closely with our founding team to make sure every deal you close is backed by capacity Mercury can actually deliver, and with our product dev team to translate what you're hearing in the field into a roadmap that helps you sell.

As a member of Mercury's executive leadership, you'll also be an outward-facing thought leader, requiring deep knowledge of the data center developer and operator industries. Approximately 25 percent of your time will be spent traveling to industry conferences, on-site customer meetings, and in-person planning sessions with the team at our headquarters in Boulder, CO.

This is a unique opportunity to build Mercury's data center sales function and pipeline from the ground up. The ideal candidate is a hunter first — someone who has personally sourced and closed complex, technical, long-cycle deals with data center operators or in adjacent infrastructure/energy markets, and who is energized by building a sales motion rather than inheriting one.

What You'll Do

Own data center market traction — build and manage the pipeline, forecast, and quota for the data center side of the business across both commercial motions: selling the Mercury flex-capacity solution, and selling/re-selling secured power capacity.

Source and close deals — prospect and build relationships with data center operators, developers, and colocation/wholesale providers; run discovery to identify sites with power constraints; structure and negotiate commercial terms; close contracts.

Build the sales and GTM motion — design and continuously refine the sales process, narrative, pricing and packaging, and competitive positioning for both the flexibility solution and the capacity resale offering; build the collateral, demos, and proposal materials the team will use to sell.

Structure capacity deals — work with the VP of Utility Solutions to match customer demand against the power capacity Mercury has secured from utility partners, and structure deals that get customers capacity fast while protecting Mercury's margin and delivery commitments.

Manage the customer relationship — serve as the primary commercial point of contact for data center accounts from first conversation through contract and into delivery, ensuring smooth handoff to the product/delivery team for pilots and implementation.

Scale the org — as pipeline and revenue grow, hire, coach, and develop a data center sales team.

Be a thought leader — speak at industry conferences and attend networking events; represent Mercury in interviews, podcasts, and press to build the market for data center flexibility and capacity resale.

Support the fundraising narrative — contribute customer proof points, revenue metrics, and pipeline data to board updates, investor narratives, and fundraising materials.

What You'll Bring

Minimum 4+ years in a sales or business development role selling into data center, colocation, energy, or critical infrastructure markets, with a track record of personally sourcing and closing deals. Comfort selling both a software/services solution and a physical, capacity-constrained product (power) — you can run a SaaS-style sales process and negotiate a capacity/commercial contract. Domain fluency in one or more of: data center siting/interconnection, power grid/wholesale markets (ISO/RTO), or data center power procurement. Strong relationship-building skills with senior technical and commercial stakeholders (VPs of Infrastructure, heads of power/energy, C-suite). Builder's bias to action — comfortable defining your own process, pricing, and pitch rather than working from an established playbook.

Nice to Have

Existing relationships with colocation/wholesale operators (e.g., Equinix, Digital Realty, QTS, Vantage). Experience selling or brokering energy/power capacity, PPAs, or demand response programs. Prior seed/Series A go-to-market experience, with the ability to build and scale a sales team as the business grows. Track record building pricing and packaging for a new or emerging product category.

Compensation & Benefits

Competitive base plus commission/variable comp, meaningful equity (executive leadership grant), full health benefits, and flexible PTO.
