JOB SUMMARY:
Lincoln University invites applications for the position of Director of Libraries. The Director serves as academic and administrative leader of the Langston Hughes Memorial Library and is responsible for the planning and administration of library services. This key leadership position is central to the University’s strategic plan and mission. The Director reports to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.
Essential Job Duties:
Serves as chief library administrative officer and provides visionary and innovative leadership in implementing the mission and goals of the Langston Hughes Memorial Library;
Articulates a clear vision for the role of an academic library in the 21st century;
Provides leadership in the development, implementation, and assessment of the library’s annual strategic operational plans
Administers and manages budget allocations and serves as advocate for the library, library faculty, professional and support staff;
Responsible for all aspects of electronic resources (management, training, purchasing, usage statistics and user support) for all LU Libraries.
Identifies and evaluates new technologies to meet library automation needs.
Coordinates with the IT department management of hardware, software, electronic information sources and telecommunications equipment used in support of the library's automated systems.
Coordinates library distance learning initiatives and support for students and faculty
Coordinates the planning, implementation and evaluation of programs;
Seeks, develops and administers external funding sources to support the expansion of library services and programming;
Effectively collaborates and communicates with all internal and external campus constituents; directs, develops, implements, and evaluates all aspects of library services to meet the scholarly and intellectual needs of the University community and its service areas;
Fosters an organizational and educational climate that promotes and celebrates diversity within the University community;
Initiates and works co-operatively on the development and acquisition of grants.
Serves as liaison to faculty and designated academic departments.
Assists the system administrator, maintain network integrity, including statistics, metering and security.
Participates in the Library yearly budget process.
Recruits and supervises the library personnel and provides for skill enhancements
Serves on and /or chair committees for professional associations at the state, regional, and national levels; and
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications: Ph.D.
Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s Degree in Library or Information Sciences from an ALA-accredited program required; additional advanced degree preferred;
A minimum of 3-5 years of progressively responsible experience in library administration in an academic library with experience in strategic planning;
Demonstrated knowledge of key trends in library science, including the ability to evaluate emerging technologies;
Demonstrated ability to effectively serve as an advocate and spokesperson for the mission of the library required.
Strong interpersonal, excellent oral and written communication and management skills required with evidence of success in developing collaborative relationships within and beyond the university:
Evidence of expertise in identifying the needs of a culturally diverse student population and commitment to faculty/staff diversity.
Rank/Salary: Commensurate with experience and qualifications.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Moderate lifting up to 20 pounds as frequently as needed to move objects; dexterity to write and manipulate computer keyboard and mouse; ability to hear and speak clearly; and body mobility to stoop, kneel, bend and reach.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is primarily performed in a university campus environment and requires a flexible schedule including evening and weekend work. Travel for administrative work is expected. The employee is subject to inside environment.
