Technical Designer

Austin · On-site

About this role

Level is a learning technology company dedicated to helping students build real academic and life skills with confidence and joy. We combine proven curriculum principles with world class interactive design to make meaningful practice something students want to come back to, not something they struggle through.

We support what teachers, schools, and parents are already doing by increasing student engagement with high quality, standards aligned practice that reinforces classroom learning. That’s why we’re building:

For students: Rewarding and motivating learning experiences that meet students where they are to build real academic proficiency.

For educators: Tools that fit naturally into instruction and help students stay engaged while reducing teacher workload.

For parents: Activities that help your kid catch up or get ahead, build confidence, and minimize homework battles, whether learning at school or at home.

We are committed to helping every person maximize their potential and live a life of meaning. It’s a difficult problem that requires brilliant people and tremendous effort over time.

Level is looking for a Technical Designer to sit at the intersection of design, engineering, and pedagogy to take a learning experience from concept to a polished experience in the hands of real users. You'll drive the experience from start to finish, working closely with pedagogy experts and cross-disciplinary support teams, and ensure the audience feedback loop drives positive iteration to the product.

This is a hands-on, force-multiplier role: half designer, half technical builder, with a refined eye on the holistic experience.

What You'll Do

  • Collaborate on a mutli-disciplinary team to deliver end-to-end instructional design for core EdTech learning content, from concept through production

  • Produce high-quality, cohesive learning modules and activities with attention to detail across a large and growing content library

  • Create and implement animations and visual content that is pedagogically relevant and appropriate.

  • Partner with content specialists, product managers, producers, UX/UI, and engineers to translate instructional intent into polished, interactive digital experiences

  • Apply principles of UX/UI design, integration design, and systems thinking to new and innovative learning activities.

  • Drive the playtest feedback loop. Sit in on playtests, make sure findings actually turn into changes, correct content yourself where you can, and escalate the bigger issues to supporting teams.

  • Design with extensibility in mind. Consider how a given solution could serve broader use cases beyond the immediate ask.

  • Work fluidly with teachers, engineering, product, and UX to keep everyone aligned on what's being built and why.

  • Leverage AI and generative AI tools to accelerate content development workflows and improve quality at scale

  • Evaluate and refine AI-assisted content for pedagogical soundness, developmental appropriateness, and standards alignment

You'll Thrive in This Role If You Have

  • 3+ years of experience in design, product design, or interactive content development.

  • Experience scripting or modding in a game engine environment (Unreal, Blueprints, Lua, Godot, or comparable tools).

  • Basic UI/UX sensibilities — you know good experience design when you see it, even if it's not your primary discipline.

  • A track record of rapid prototyping. You can take existing tools and content and quickly shape them toward a specific experience outcome.

  • A genuine passion for holistic experience quality: coherence, polish, and deep empathy for the end user's journey.

  • Strong cross-functional communication skills — you can translate between design, engineering, and product without losing nuance.

  • Ability to manage multiple workstreams and maintain high quality at startup pace.

  • A portfolio or work samples demonstrating instructional design, interactive content, game design, and/or animation work (please include a link with your application)

Nice to Have

  • K–12 classroom teaching experience.

  • Experience with adaptive or personalized learning systems.

  • Experience directly incorporating research findings into product or content decisions.
