POSITION SUMMARY

The Port Handy Man is responsible for performing general maintenance, repairs, inspections, and upkeep throughout Sun Terminals' facilities and terminal operations at Port Everglades. This position supports the safe, efficient, and well-maintained operation of terminal buildings, offices, gates, fences, common areas, and other facility infrastructure.

The Port Handy Man performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance tasks, including basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, drywall repair, hardware installation, furniture assembly, and general facility repairs.

The ideal candidate is a dependable, mechanically inclined individual who can identify maintenance issues, troubleshoot problems, complete repairs safely and efficiently, and respond promptly to maintenance requests in a fast-paced marine terminal environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

General Facility Maintenance

• Perform general maintenance, repairs, and upkeep throughout terminal facilities, buildings, offices, warehouses, and designated operational areas.
• Conduct routine inspections of facilities and infrastructure to identify maintenance, repair, and safety concerns.
• Respond promptly to maintenance requests and emergency repair needs.
• Identify potential problems before they become major repairs and communicate concerns to management.
• Assist with preventive maintenance programs and facility improvement projects.
• Maintain the overall appearance, functionality, and condition of assigned areas.

Doors, Gates & Hardware

• Repair and maintain doors, gates, locks, hinges, handles, closers, latches, and other hardware.
• Adjust, replace, and install door and gate components as necessary.
• Troubleshoot basic issues with facility access points and report major security or access-control concerns to management.
• Maintain fences, barriers, railings, and other facility structures.

Plumbing

• Perform basic plumbing repairs and maintenance.
• Repair or replace faucets, toilets, sinks, valves, pipes, drains, and related fixtures.
• Identify leaks, clogs, and other plumbing issues.
• Perform basic drain cleaning and troubleshooting.
• Report major plumbing failures or issues requiring licensed contractor support.

Electrical Maintenance

• Perform basic electrical maintenance and repairs within the scope of training and authorization.
• Replace light bulbs, lighting fixtures, switches, outlets, and other basic electrical components.
• Inspect lighting and electrical fixtures for damage or malfunction.
• Report electrical hazards, major electrical issues, or conditions requiring a licensed electrician to management.
• Follow all applicable safety requirements when performing electrical work.

Carpentry, Drywall & Structural Repairs

• Repair and maintain walls, ceilings, floors, fences, doors, and other facility structures.
• Perform drywall patching and repairs.
• Paint and touch up interior and exterior surfaces as needed.
• Apply caulking and sealants around doors, windows, fixtures, and other areas.
• Repair minor damage to wood, metal, concrete, and other facility materials.
• Assist with minor carpentry and construction projects.

Installation & Assembly

• Assemble, install, relocate, and repair furniture, shelving, cabinets, signs, fixtures, and other equipment.
• Install signage and facility-related materials in designated locations.
• Assist with office, warehouse, and terminal improvement projects.
• Safely move and position materials and equipment as required.

Preventive Maintenance & Inspections

• Conduct routine inspections of buildings, facilities, equipment, and common areas.
• Identify worn, damaged, or unsafe conditions.
• Assist in establishing and maintaining preventive maintenance schedules.
• Perform scheduled maintenance tasks to prevent equipment and facility failures.
• Maintain adequate supplies of commonly used maintenance materials and notify management when inventory needs replenishment.

Tools & Equipment

• Safely operate hand tools, power tools, ladders, carts, and other maintenance equipment.
• Inspect tools and equipment before use and report damaged or unsafe equipment.
• Maintain tools and equipment in clean, organized, and operational condition.
• Follow manufacturer instructions and company procedures when operating equipment.

Documentation & Communication

• Maintain accurate records of completed repairs, inspections, maintenance activities, and work orders.
• Document materials and supplies used for maintenance projects.
• Communicate maintenance concerns and recommended repairs to the Maintenance Supervisor or Manager.
• Provide timely updates regarding outstanding maintenance requests.
• Report hazardous conditions, significant property damage, safety concerns, or repairs requiring specialized assistance.

Safety & Compliance

• Follow all Sun Terminals safety policies, procedures, and workplace rules.
• Properly use all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
• Follow Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures when applicable and as trained.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area.
• Properly handle and store maintenance materials, chemicals, tools, and equipment.
• Immediately report accidents, injuries, unsafe conditions, environmental concerns, and property damage to management.
• Maintain awareness of vehicle, vessel, cargo-handling, and heavy-equipment activity within the terminal.
• Follow all applicable Port Everglades access, security, and operational requirements.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Ability to obtain and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) if required for access to restricted areas of Port Everglades.
• Minimum of 2 years of general maintenance, facilities maintenance, construction, handyman, or related experience preferred.
• Demonstrated knowledge of basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, drywall, and general building maintenance.
• Ability to safely operate hand tools and power tools.
• Ability to troubleshoot and resolve routine maintenance issues.
• Ability to read and follow basic instructions, work orders, diagrams, and equipment manuals.
• Valid Florida Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
• Ability to successfully complete required background screening and pre-employment requirements.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Previous experience working in a marine terminal, port, warehouse, industrial, manufacturing, or commercial facility environment.
• Technical school or vocational training in maintenance, construction, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, or a related trade.
• Experience with preventive maintenance programs.
• Experience operating lifts or other maintenance equipment.
• Basic knowledge of HVAC systems.
• Basic welding or metal fabrication experience.
• OSHA safety training or related safety certifications.
• Experience working around heavy equipment and active industrial operations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The position requires the ability to perform physical maintenance activities throughout an active marine terminal environment.

The employee must be able to:

• Frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, reach, and work in various positions.
• Frequently lift and carry materials, tools, and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Occasionally lift heavier materials with appropriate assistance or equipment.
• Climb ladders and work from elevated platforms when properly trained and authorized.
• Work in confined or restricted areas when required and when appropriate safety procedures are followed.
• Operate hand and power tools for extended periods.
• Perform repetitive hand and arm movements.
• Visually inspect equipment, structures, and work areas for defects or hazards.
• Work outdoors for extended periods in heat, humidity, rain, wind, and other South Florida weather conditions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The Port Handy Man works in an active marine terminal and industrial environment and may routinely be exposed to:

• Moving vehicles and heavy equipment
• Cargo-handling operations

• Noise and vibration
• Dust and debris
• Outdoor weather conditions
• Uneven walking surfaces
• Elevated work areas

The employee must maintain constant awareness of their surroundings and comply with all terminal safety and security procedures.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work 

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work vary depending on the company’s needs.

Travel 

No travel is expected for this position.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications 

Applicants need to be able to obtain a Ports ID and a TWIC card.
