We're looking for a Service Designer to join hedgehog lab on a permanent basis, working across government projects where the design challenges are genuinely complex and the outcomes genuinely matter.
This role is for someone who has already designed services inside live government or UK public sector environments. It is essential experience for this position. If you haven't yet worked on a public sector service, this particular role won't be the right fit, but we'd still welcome your interest for future openings.
You'll map end-to-end service journeys, identify failure points, and work across organisational boundaries to design services that work for the people who use them, not just the people who commission them. You'll be as comfortable in a workshop with policy teams as you are in a design critique.
This is a hybrid role. You'll work from home most of the week, with two days on site at our client's Manchester or Newcastle office, whichever is closest to you. We're looking for candidates based within 50 miles of either location.
Essential experience:
You have designed services for UK public sector or central government environments. We can't progress your application for this role without it.
Experience designing services across discovery, alpha, beta and live phases
Strong skills in service blueprinting, journey mapping, and facilitation
Familiarity with GDS standards and the GOV.UK Service Standard, including experience of service assessments
The ability to navigate ambiguity and work with incomplete information
Experience influencing decisions at a strategic level, not just execution
Desirable:
Eligibility for UK security clearance (BPSS as a minimum, SC an advantage), and willingness to undergo it
