Assistant Professor, Addictionologist

This position is contingent upon the availability of grant funding.

Job Summary

This position is for a full-time physician who will serve as a core member of the faculty team in the Department of Family Medicine Addiction Medicine Fellowship. In this role, the appropriate candidate will supervise and teach fellows in a 12-month Addiction Medicine Fellowship as a member of a professionally integrated team, treating patients with the diagnosis of behavioral addictions and substance use disorders, and participating in meaningful activities related to scholarly advancement of the specialty and administrative needs of the program. The successful candidate will deliver a collaborative model of medical care in conjunction with counseling and therapy interventions.  

Responsibilities include: 

• Provide initial medical diagnosis
• Identify medical and health risks
• Formulate appropriate differential diagnosis based on history, physical examination, and diagnostic testing
• Perform psychosocial assessments and mental status exams to referred clients and, when indicated, prescribe appropriate medications
• Record and review medication management in accordance with state agencies and third-party payer standards
• Complete accurate and timely documentation of observations, interventions, plan of care, referrals, and follow-up
• Remain current in best practices, motivate staff to provide quality care, and complete documentation in a timely fashion
• Make appropriate referrals to other health professionals and community agencies
• Contribute to continuing education of medical students, resident physicians, and community providers by serving as a role model, mentor, and resource for better   understanding and management of substance use disorders and behavioral addictions
• Participate in scholarly activity in the form of presentations locally, nationally, publications and/or text chapters
• Supervise and guide the education of various learners in the clinical and academic spaces of the Fellowship. This includes Addiction Medicine Fellows, Resident Physicians, medical students as well as undergraduate and master's level students from various departments and colleges.

Required Qualifications 

• At time of hire, candidate must be Board Certified by the American Board of Prevention Medicine (ABPM) in Addiction Medicine; OR Completion of an ACGME-accredited Addiction Medicine Fellowship and eligible to take the ABPM Board Exam to certify in Addiction Medicine; OR Current Board Certification as an Addiction Psychiatry specialist by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN).
• Medical Degree from accredited college/university.
• An active DEA registration in good standing is required at the time of hire and must be maintained throughout employment.
• Currently licensed, or able to obtain a license by hire date, by the Tennessee State Medical Licensure Board, and such license is not/will not be restricted.
• No reportable items to the National Practitioner Data Bank within the last ten (10) years.
