About the Role

Proctors are the frontline of the Duolingo English Test’s security and integrity operation. As a Proctor, you are the first human to evaluate each test session after it is submitted. You review recorded video sessions asynchronously, analyzing test taker behavior, verifying identity compliance, and flagging violations so that each test is processed accurately and within the 48-hour SLA.

This role operates within a structured review pipeline. Complex or borderline cases route to secondary review for final adjudication. Your role is to handle the full breadth of the standard queue with speed, consistency, and sound judgment.

You will...

  • Review recorded DET sessions end-to-end, including the onboarding phase (room scan, ear scan, secondary camera) and the main exam.
  • Document where potential infractions appear within each session.
  • Make accurate, evidence-based validity decisions within the expected team review-time range.
  • Escalate sessions that require secondary review or internal hold according to protocol.
  • Complete monthly calibration sets used to measure decision accuracy against expert ground truth.
  • Participate in general and role-specific training modules as released.
  • Attend monthly remote calibration and team meetings, typically fewer than three per month.
  • Log time accurately against activity codes through a third-party platform.
  • Communicate blockers and issues to leads promptly.
  • Adapt quickly to process changes in a fast-paced remote environment.
  • Provide meaningful feedback on new and existing processes.

You have…

  • Expert English fluency.
  • Experience in language evaluation, teaching, or test proctoring, including one or more of the following:
    • a TEFL, TESOL, or ESL certificate (120-hour minimum) plus 2+ years of applied ESL experience
    • a BA or MA in Linguistics, TESOL, or Education
    • a BA or MA in a related field with experience in assessment and teaching
  • Ability to read and interpret gestures, facial expressions, and behavioral cues from video.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to make consistent, evidence-based decisions.
  • Excellent critical thinking skills and comfort working through ambiguity and edge cases.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to process changes in a fast-paced remote environment.
  • A private and secure computer or laptop; tablets and mobile devices are not permitted for this work.
  • Reliable high-speed internet with at least 100 Mbps download and upload speeds.
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides) and Slack.
  • Availability to work weekends.

Exceptional candidates will have…

  • Experience with ticketing tools such as Zendesk, Jira, or Clearfeed.
  • Fluency in Mandarin, Arabic, or an Indian language.
  • Prior experience with asynchronous or remote proctoring platforms.
  • Experience with online test security or fraud detection.
