The Senior Accountant will own accurate and timely accounting, reporting, and close activities within a centralized accounting department that supports both corporate and division accounting. This role is ideal for an experienced accountant who can independently own recurring accounting responsibilities, resolve routine issues, and support more complex accounting matters with guidance from managers. The Senior Accountant will work closely with accounting team members and accounting and finance leadership.

Key Responsibilities

Prepare and post journal entries with appropriate supporting documentation
Prepare account reconciliations and resolve reconciling items
Complete period-end close activities and reporting deliverables accurately and on time
Ensure journal entries follow accounting policies and question or escalate inconsistent items
Verify process and policy documentation for assigned areas is kept current
Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and scalability through process standardization
Support system enhancements, report improvements, and automation initiatives
Share knowledge and contribute to the development of accounting team capabilities
Support audits and regulatory filings by preparing accurate and timely information
Contribute to special projects, analyses, and ad hoc report requests

Qualifications and Skills

Solid knowledge of US GAAP, financial reporting, general ledger accounting, and reconciliations
Understanding of close processes, transaction flows, and their impact on the general ledger
Sound judgment and professional skepticism to identify and escalate unusual items
Ability to assess business issues, evaluate alternatives, and recommend practical next steps
Self-directed and organized, with clear communication around priorities, progress, and obstacles
Reliable in meeting deadlines and delivering accurate, complete work
Effective communication skills with team members, leaders, and internal stakeholders
Advanced Excel skills for analyzing, reconciling, and validating large datasets
Continuous improvement mindset and curiosity to understand the business
Adaptable and comfortable working through change and new initiatives

Education and Work Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from an accredited college or university required
Public accounting or corporate accounting experience in a complex, multi-entity environment
4+ years of progressive accounting experience preferred
Homebuilding, real estate, or construction industry experience preferred
CPA or CPA candidate required; equivalent international certification with intent to obtain US CPA licensure considered
US GAAP knowledge required; SOX 404, J-SOX, and J-GAAP knowledge is a plus
Experience with business growth, system changes, reporting enhancements, or automation is a plus
