The Assistant Controller is a key operational partner to the VP, Corporate Controller within a centralized accounting department supporting both corporate and division accounting. This role combines hands-on accounting responsibilities with team leadership, process improvement, and cross-functional coordination.
The Assistant Controller will supervise and develop accounting personnel, review accounting work, and oversee assigned accounting and reporting responsibilities, including direct ownership of select accounting areas. Building on an established foundation, this role will help advance the accounting function through greater consistency, team development, and operational efficiency.
Success in this role requires balancing day-to-day execution with longer-term improvements that strengthen processes and support the evolving needs of a growing organization. The Assistant Controller will work closely with accounting team members, accounting and finance leadership, external auditors, and other business partners.
Key Responsibilities
Supervise, coach, and develop Senior and Staff Accountants through regular guidance, work review, performance feedback, and professional development
Review accounting work products to ensure accuracy, completeness, consistency, and adherence to established policies and procedures
Oversee period-end close activities and reporting deliverables within assigned areas while maintaining direct ownership and preparation responsibilities for select accounting areas
Coordinate closely with other accounting leaders to align priorities, resolve issues, and promote consistency across the accounting organization
Perform analytical reviews of financial results, investigate significant fluctuations, and ensure reported balances and activity are reasonable and well supported
Maintain and enhance accounting policies, procedures, and process documentation that support consistency, accountability, and a strong control environment
Drive improvements to accounting processes, reporting, and workflows through standardization, automation, and effective use of technology
Contribute to the continued enhancement of processes, tracking mechanisms, and accountability practices that improve visibility, coordination, and execution across the department
Independently resolve routine and moderately complex accounting and operational issues while appropriately escalating significant matters and keeping leadership informed
Support audits, regulatory filings, accounting research, and special projects by coordinating requests and providing accurate, timely information
Qualifications and Skills
Strong knowledge of US GAAP, general ledger accounting, reconciliations, and advanced Excel skills used to support reporting, analysis, and process improvement
Demonstrated ability to lead, develop, and review the work of accounting professionals
Through understanding of close processes, transaction flows, internal controls, and financial reporting requirements
Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with the ability to assess trends, identify issues, investigate unusual results, and recommend practical solutions
Effective project and priority management skills with the ability to coordinate multiple initiatives and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate across teams and effectively manage upward
Adaptable and effective in leading teams through changing priorities, process enhancements, new initiatives, and organizational growth
Education and Work Experience
Bachelor's degree in Accounting from an accredited college or university required
Public accounting or corporate accounting experience in a complex, multi-entity environment
8+ years of progressive accounting experience preferred
Prior experience supervising, developing, and reviewing the work of accounting personnel required
Homebuilding, real estate, or construction industry experience preferred
CPA required; equivalent international certification with intent to obtain US CPA licensure considered
US GAAP knowledge required; SOX 404, J-SOX, and J-GAAP knowledge is a plus
Experience supporting business growth, system changes, process improvements, reporting enhancements, or automation initiatives preferred
