CI is recruiting an Environmental and Social Safeguards Senior Coordinator to support the high-performing Global Safeguards Team and its work managing the CI Safeguard System.  The CI Safeguard System is designed to prevent adverse environmental and social impacts and enhance projects’ benefits for people and nature.  The Global Safeguards Team networks with colleagues across the institution to build safeguard capacity, develop guidance, provide project-specific support, troubleshoot problems, and support safeguard monitoring.

The Environmental and Social Safeguards Senior Coordinator provides programmatic, technical, communications, research, administrative, and logistical assistance necessary for the smooth function of the CI Safeguard System.  The position supports project design and implementation, provision of technical expertise, reporting on safeguards, training of CI staff and partners, institution-wide communications, knowledge management, review of trends and opportunities, and all administrative functions.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The key responsibilities of the Environmental and Social Safeguards Senior Coordinator are fulfilled both independently and in coordination with the Global Safeguards Team.  They include:

Provide Programmatic & Technical Support

  • Organize, develop, and implement trainings and capacity-building workshops related to the CI Safeguard System and other safeguard themes for CI staff and partners.
  • Provide technical safeguard support to staff and project teams.
  • Create, edit, and maintain user-friendly safeguard resources (e.g., templates, guides, etc.).
  • Support coordination between the Global Safeguards Team and other CI staff members and/or partners and consultants, including through working groups and communities of practice.
  • Support safeguards performance data collection, analysis, and reporting.

Manage Team Communications & Knowledge Platforms 

  • Develop and/or maintain internal safeguard communications and knowledge management platforms.
  • Advise other CI teams on internal communications and knowledge management platforms.
  • Track and facilitate responses to internal inquiries about safeguards and the Global Safeguards Team’s work.
  • Draft, proofread and/or edit written safeguard posts, documents, presentations, and reports for CI-wide distribution.
  • Develop and/or maintain internal safeguard training platforms.
  • Manage dissemination of safeguard materials, updates, and news through internal communication channels.
  • Support maintenance of CI’s public safeguards webpage.

Support Research Initiatives 

  • Conduct research on evolving safeguard best practices, trends, and donor requirements.
  • Research and develop case studies and safeguard examples to support capacity building of CI staff.
  • Research and identify safeguard training opportunities for CI staff.

Administrative and Logistical Support

  • Manage logistics (travel, venue, accommodations, etc.) and coordination for activities, including but not limited to online/in-person webinars, trainings, workshops, meetings, conferences, and events.
  • Manage grants and contracts for consultants and service providers.
  • Provide administrative support and backstopping to Global Safeguards Team members.
  • Maintain up-to-date directories of CI safeguards staff, points of contact, staff who have received training, and external safeguard consultants.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Position is located primarily in an office environment with computer-based work.
  • Light lifting may be required.
  • Occasional local and/or international travel to rural and/or urban settings for conferences, workshops, meetings and site visits may be required.
  • Travel may involve significant time spent outdoors and in community settings.
  • Compensation and contract terms are contingent on location.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Bachelor's degree or up to four years of university studies.  
  • 2 to 4 years of general work experience.  
  • Highly organized and motivated.
  • Demonstrated technical interest in safeguards and/or human rights in the context of conservation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.  
  • Strong attention to detail for managing multiple workstreams, managing administrative and technical tasks, and adapting to changing priorities.
  • Demonstrated experience in graphic design and crafting communication (posts, presentations, reports) for impact.
  • Ability to design user-friendly technical resources, tools, or guides supporting implementation of the CISS.
  • Demonstrated experience managing targeted projects or tasks to completion.
  • Fluency in Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, OneNote, MS Forms, Co-Pilot, Power BI, etc.).  
  • Ability to work independently and with a team in a multicultural, diverse, and dynamic environment.

Preferred

  • Proficiency in at least one other CI priority language (Spanish, Portuguese, French, Indonesian).
  • Academic training and/or prior experience in conservation, safeguards, international development, or related field.
