Building Automation Controls Engineer (BAS/HVAC)

Cincinnati, OH | In-Office Position

Comfort Systems USA Ohio is seeking an experienced Building Automation Controls Engineer to support commercial Building Automation Systems (BAS), HVAC controls, DDC programming, system integration, and commissioning projects throughout the Cincinnati region.

This position is specifically focused on commercial building automation and HVAC control systems. It is not a manufacturing automation, robotics, or PLC-focused controls engineering position.

We are looking for someone with hands-on experience designing, programming, configuring, commissioning, and troubleshooting commercial BAS/DDC systems. Experience with Tridium Niagara or other leading commercial building automation platforms is highly valued.

This position is based in Cincinnati, Ohio and requires regular work from the Cincinnati office as well as travel to local customer and project sites. Relocation assistance is not available. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship.

What You'll Do

BAS Engineering & System Design

• Review mechanical drawings, project specifications, and sequences of operation to understand project requirements.

• Develop and interpret HVAC control sequences for commercial building automation projects.

• Support the development of BAS system architectures, control strategies, network layouts, point lists, and equipment requirements.

• Develop or support control drawings, wiring diagrams, equipment schedules, and technical submittals.

• Apply appropriate control strategies to commercial HVAC equipment and systems.

Programming & System Development

• Program and configure BAS/DDC systems based on approved sequences of operation and project requirements.

• Develop control logic, graphics, trends, alarms, schedules, histories, and system integrations.

• Configure and support commercial building automation platforms.

• Support system upgrades, modifications, and performance improvements.

• Maintain programming records, system backups, graphics, and other technical documentation.

Commissioning & Troubleshooting

• Perform and support system startup, testing, commissioning, and functional validation.

• Verify system operation against sequences of operation, project requirements, and design intent.

• Troubleshoot controller programming, network communication, integration, graphics, and operational issues.

• Identify opportunities to improve system performance, reliability, occupant comfort, and energy efficiency.

• Provide technical support to field technicians and project teams during installation, startup, and commissioning.

HVAC Controls & System Integration

• Integrate BAS with commercial HVAC equipment and third-party building systems.

• Work with BACnet, Modbus, and other industry-standard building automation communication protocols.

• Support control of equipment and systems including air handling units, rooftop units, VAV systems, chillers, boilers, pumps, and central plants.

• Troubleshoot communication and integration issues between controllers, equipment, networks, and third-party systems.

Project Support

• Work with project managers, field technicians, contractors, and other internal teams throughout project execution.

• Participate in project turnover, technical coordination, startup, commissioning, and closeout activities.

• Document field changes and maintain accurate programming, drawings, backups, and as-built information.

• Communicate technical issues, project risks, and scope questions clearly and proactively.

• Provide technical guidance to customers and facility personnel as needed.

What We're Looking For

Required

• 3+ years of hands-on experience with commercial Building Automation Systems (BAS), DDC systems, or HVAC controls.

• Experience programming, configuring, commissioning, or troubleshooting commercial BAS control systems.

• Strong working knowledge of commercial HVAC equipment, systems, and control strategies.

• Experience with BACnet, Modbus, or similar building automation communication protocols.

• Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, sequences of operation, specifications, and technical documentation.

• Ability to troubleshoot BAS controllers, programming, networks, communication issues, system integrations, and equipment operation.

• Associate degree, bachelor's degree, technical certification, or equivalent directly relevant BAS/HVAC controls experience.

• Ability to travel to customer and project sites throughout the Cincinnati region as needed.

Preferred

• Experience with Tridium Niagara AX or Niagara N4.

• Niagara N4 Certification.

• Experience with commercial BAS platforms such as Schneider Electric, Johnson Controls, Siemens, Honeywell, Automated Logic, or Distech.

• Experience developing graphics, trends, alarms, schedules, and system integrations.

• Experience with chilled water systems, boiler plants, central plant controls, or complex HVAC sequences.

• Experience independently supporting BAS projects through programming, startup, commissioning, troubleshooting, and closeout.
