Job Summary:

 

Under the direction of the News Editor, the Universal Desk Editor will fulfill editing and/or assignment duties for The Gazette and other Clarity publications.   Additional Newsroom duties may be assigned pending operational needs.


This is a part-time position, 16 hours a week.  Shift may include nights, weekends and holidays.


Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Edit content for The Gazette and other Clarity publications as assigned.  Ensure that all Gazette journalism standards are followed, including accuracy, fairness and style. 
  • Assign stories and work with reporters and other journalists in producing credible and compelling content.  Write and develop stories as needed.
  • Assist in the planning and production of digital, print and other news products.  Consistently meet deadlines.
  • Assist in pagination and other production duties as assigned or warranted.

Minimum Education & Work Experience Requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s degree. 
  • At least 5 years of daily news experience is preferred. 
  • In-depth knowledge of sports and proficiency in sports news production  
  • Proficiency in editing and presentation. 
  • Proficiency in digital journalism.  
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively. 
  • Intermediate or higher computer skills. 
  • Ability to apply effective time management and self-management skills in a busy work environment; ability to meet deadlines despite regular interruptions and deadline pressure. 
  • Must be highly detail-oriented and meticulous. 
  • Must be able to multitask, balance priorities and work independently. 
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills. 
  • Must be committed to teamwork and able to collaborate well with employees within the features team and the overall newsroom.
