JOB SUMMARY

The Director of Dental Services serves as the clinical leader for Chase Brexton Health Services' multi-site dental program. This position is responsible for ensuring the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based, patient-centered dental care; maintaining compliance with professional, regulatory, and organizational standards; overseeing provider performance, clinical quality, infection prevention, residency training, and clinical operations; and supporting strategic growth and development of dental services. The Director maintains an active clinical practice, provides direct patient care, and supports clinical coverage to ensure continuity of care and patient access.

Work Schedule (subject to change as business needs and operations require)

• Maintain a schedule of 7 clinic sessions and 3 administrative sessions per week. One administrative session can be performed remotely if aligned with meeting schedules and patient care needs. 

• At least one administrative session per month must be conducted at a county site on a rotating basis. 

• Vacation and sick time must be requested and reported consistently with Chase Brexton policies. 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Patient Care

Provide direct patient care within the licensed scope of practice.

Serve as a mentor and clinical resource for dentists, residents, hygienists, and support staff.

Promote preventive oral healthcare and population health initiatives consistent with the mission of a Federally Qualified Health Center.

Oversee clinical operations across all dental sites to ensure safe, efficient, and patient-centered care.

Strategic Leadership

Serve as the clinical leader for all dental services across multiple locations.

• Lead quality assurance and quality improvement initiatives to improve clinical outcomes, patient experience, and operational performance.

• Maintain oversight of infection prevention and control programs across all dental locations.

• Oversee sterilization processes, equipment maintenance, radiation safety, and environmental safety practices.

• Direct and oversee residency, externship, and other dental education programs.

• Serve as a member of the leadership team and contribute to organizational strategic planning.

• Develop and monitor departmental goals, quality metrics, productivity measures, and growth initiatives.

Compliance, Policy, and Procedure

• Establish and oversee standards of care, clinical protocols, and evidence-based practice guidelines.

• Monitor quality of care, patient outcomes, and provider performance to ensure adherence to accepted standards of practice.

• Conduct clinical chart reviews and peer reviews to evaluate treatment planning, documentation, and quality of care

• Ensure compliance with organizational policies, regulatory requirements, accreditation standards, and professional practice standards.

• Monitor provider documentation, treatment planning, coding, billing practices, and timely completion of clinical records.

• Ensure compliance with OSHA, CDC, state, and organizational infection control standards.

• Support regulatory inspections, audits, and accreditation activities.

Teamwork

• Provide clinical coverage during provider absences, vacancies, or staffing shortages to ensure continuity of patient care.

Analytical and Critical Thinking

• Investigate and address clinical quality concerns, patient complaints, and risk-management issues.

• Analyze operational and clinical data to identify opportunities for improvement and service expansion.

• Provide regular reports and recommendations to senior leadership regarding dental operations, performance, staffing, and community needs.

Performance Management

• Ensure staff training, competencies, certifications, and ongoing compliance with safety requirements.

• Ensure appropriate supervision, mentorship, and evaluation of residents and students.

• Supervise dentists, hygienists, dental assistants, and other clinical support staff.

Resource, Staff, and Budget

• Participate in recruitment, onboarding, performance management, and professional development activities.

Workgroup Effectiveness

• Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, continuous improvement, and clinical excellence.

Communication

• Collaborate with Quality, Compliance, and Revenue Cycle departments to support regulatory compliance and documentation integrity.

• Serve as the primary liaison with affiliated dental schools and academic partners.

• Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to improve access to care and oral health outcomes.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Strong clinical knowledge and commitment to evidence-based dentistry.

• Knowledge of dental regulations, infection control standards, quality improvement, and compliance requirements.

• Demonstrated leadership, team-building, and supervisory skills.

• Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.

• Experience utilizing dental practice management and electronic health record systems.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Required

• DDS or DMD from an accredited dental school.

• Current unrestricted Maryland dental license.

• Minimum five (5) years of clinical dental practice experience.

Preferred

• Minimum three (3) years of leadership, supervisory, or management experience.[SR1.1]

• Experience in an FQHC, community health center, academic setting, or multi-site dental practice.

• Experience supervising residents, students, or dental education programs.

• Experience leading quality improvement, infection control, or compliance initiatives.
