Summary

American Progress has an immediate opening for a Director of Media Relations. The Director will work as a senior member of the Communications department and will work closely with policy staff from the organization’s Economic, Health, and Disability Justice programs to develop and implement press outreach for American Progress products and initiatives. They will work with other members of the Communications department to create content as needed.

Responsibilities

Develop and implement press and communications plans for American Progress’ policy work, especially in the areas of economics, health, and disability policy.
Provide pitching and other press outreach support to American Progress campaigns and other initiatives.
Collaborate with American Progress’ policy, advocacy, digital communications, events, and government affairs teams to create holistic outreach plans for organization initiatives.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements and qualifications

Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
A minimum of seven years of experience in media and/or communications is required. On-the-record spokesperson experience is strongly preferred.
Excellent writing skills.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well on a team and across teams.
Ability to multitask and to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
Entrepreneurial; strong problem-solving and creative thinking skills.
Working knowledge of American Progress issues.
Strong political instincts.
Ability to build, motivate, and work within a team to accomplish project goals.
Experience working in a non-profit, campaign, or local, state, or federal government environment is a plus.
Reporter relationships, especially on economics, health, or disability beats, is a plus.
Commitment to the organization’s mission and goals.
