Job Summary

The overall purpose of the Certified Medication Aide position is to administer oral and topical medications to patients/residents. This individual must perform these tasks as ordered by a physician, under the supervision of a licensed nurse, and in accordance with state and federal rules and regulations. Also, must perform routine daily tasks required in maintaining the health, comfort and well-being of the patients/residents.

QualificationsQualifications

State certification as a Nursing Assistant mandatory.
State approved medication administration certification (where required).
Ability to read, write, and speak the English language.

Essential Functions

Administers medications as ordered by a physician under the supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with any state and federal regulations and consistent with facility policy.
Demonstrates knowledge of "five rights" of medication administration.
May take and record vital signs of patients/residents/residents as assigned or as may be required by certain medications.
Records the administration of medications and/or treatments appropriately.
Observes for and reports any reactions and/or side effects of medications to a licensed nurse or the appropriate shift.
Administers PRN medications in accordance with state and federal regulations and consistent with facility policy.
Documents reason for and response to PRN medications in a timely manner.
May dispense narcotics and must account for them under the supervision of the licensed (or charge) nurse per facility policy.
Properly secures medication carts/medication rooms per state and federal regulations and facility policy.
Attends facility education in-services.

Essential Functions (continued)

May make observation rounds under the supervision of the licensed nurse (or charge nurse) on the shift.
May supervise nursing assistants/orderlies as assigned by the charge nurse (or charge nurse) on the shift.
Ensures that medication room, med carts and medication refrigerators are kept clean and well organized.
Ensures that any expired medications are removed for destruction per facility policy and procedures.
Attends Quality Assurance meetings per request.
Ability to function as a Team Leader/Role Model.
Has reviewed Cantex Continuing Care Networks Clinical Policies and Procedures for Abuse Prevention and knows the employee's responsibility to enforce it.
Responsible for assuring patient/resident safety.
Performs other duties as assigned.
