Fiber-to-the-Home Technician

Our operations include fiber optic and telecommunications infrastructure installation, trenching, boring, aerial construction, cable placement, and related field services.

JOB DESCRIPTION
The Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) Technician is responsible for the installation, connection, testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting of fiber optic telecommunications systems serving residential and commercial customers. This position performs hands-on field work involving fiber optic cable, terminals, closures, drops, network equipment, and customer premises connections.
The ideal candidate is dependable, safety-conscious, mechanically inclined, comfortable working outdoors and at heights, and able to work independently while maintaining high-quality workmanship and professional customer service.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS- INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING
- Install, maintain, repair, and troubleshoot FTTH fiber optic networks.
- Perform fiber optic drop installations from network facilities to customer premises.
- Install and connect fiber optic terminals, NIDs, enclosures, pedestals, closures, and related equipment.
- Perform fiber preparation, connection, splicing, and termination as required.
- Use fiber optic test equipment such as optical power meters, light sources, and OTDRs to test and troubleshoot fiber circuits.
- Identify and repair fiber optic faults, damaged cable, poor connections, and service interruptions.
- Read and interpret construction plans, maps, work orders, fiber diagrams, and utility markings.
- Perform aerial and underground fiber installations, including work from bucket trucks, ladders, and other approved access equipment.
- Assist with fiber cable placement, pulling, lashing, grounding, and securing.
- Perform customer premise installations and ensure equipment is properly installed, connected, labeled, and functioning.
- Verify signal levels and service quality before completing work.
- Maintain accurate records of completed installations, testing results, materials used, and work performed.
- Communicate professionally with customers, supervisors, coworkers, utility personnel, and other contractors.
- Maintain company vehicles, tools, equipment, and assigned inventory in a clean and serviceable condition.
- Properly use personal protective equipment (PPE) and fall-protection equipment when required.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area and properly dispose of construction debris and materials.
- Complete required paperwork, electronic work orders, photographs, and documentation accurately and timely.
- Follow all company policies, safety procedures, traffic-control requirements, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Basic to advanced knowledge of fiber optic telecommunications systems preferred.
- Ability to identify fiber optic components and understand basic fiber network architecture.
- Ability to use hand tools, power tools, ladders, bucket trucks, and other field equipment safely.
- Ability to operate fiber testing and diagnostic equipment.
- Ability to read maps, construction drawings, schematics, and work orders.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
- Ability to communicate effectively with customers and coworkers.
- Ability to manage time effectively and complete assigned work within established deadlines.
- Basic computer and mobile-device skills for electronic work orders and documentation.
- Previous FTTH or fiber optic installation experience preferred.
- Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
- Ability to pass company-required background and driving record checks.
- Must be able to successfully complete required company safety and technical training.
PHYSICAL & WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position requires regular travel to and between construction job sites and may require working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
The position may require:
- Work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and other environmental conditions.
- Frequently stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, climb, reach, and work in confined or difficult-to-access areas.
- Lift, carry, push, and pull tools, equipment, cable, and materials weighing up to approximately 75 pounds.
- Climb ladders and work from aerial lifts or bucket trucks when properly trained and authorized.
- Work at heights while following required fall-protection procedures.
- Perform repetitive hand and arm movements associated with fiber installation and construction activities.
- Visually inspect fiber, equipment, labels, and work areas and distinguish colors used for fiber identification.
- Travel to various job sites as required.
- Working extended hours, weekends, or varying schedules as project demands require.
