Bascom Hunter is seeking a Software Engineering Intern to support the development, integration, and testing of software for aerospace and defense applications. The intern will gain hands-on experience supporting software used in embedded electronics, communications, control systems, environmental control and thermal management systems, power systems, and other mission-critical technologies.
The intern will work alongside multidisciplinary engineering teams and contribute to projects throughout the software development lifecycle, including requirements development, coding, integration, testing, troubleshooting, and documentation.
Bascom Hunter provides custom solutions to the Department of Defense and aerospace markets, with capabilities spanning advanced electronics, communications, RF systems, environmental control, thermal management, power, and other mission-critical technologies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in the development, integration, testing, and maintenance of software supporting aerospace, defense, and engineering applications.
- Write, debug, test, and improve software using languages such as Python, C, C++, or other languages appropriate to the project.
- Learn and apply modern software development practices, including version control, code review, branching strategies, issue tracking, documentation, and collaborative development workflows.
- Use Git-based development workflows to manage source code, contribute changes, review code, and participate in team software development.
- Support containerized software development and deployment using technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
- Gain exposure to DevOps practices, including automated builds, testing, deployment, monitoring, and continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD).
- Assist with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and automated environment configuration using tools such as Pulumi, Terraform, Ansible, or similar technologies.
- Develop and maintain automated tests using test-driven development (TDD), unit testing, integration testing, and system-level testing approaches.
- Create test scripts, utilities, simulators, and other engineering tools used to verify software behavior and system performance.
- Assist with software/hardware integration, including interfaces to sensors, embedded computers, communications systems, RF equipment, and other electronic hardware.
- Gain experience working with Linux-based development environments, virtualized systems, containers, networking, and distributed software applications.
- Use engineering ticket and project management systems to document tasks, defects, requirements, technical decisions, and development progress.
- Assist with data collection, processing, visualization, and analysis to support software testing and engineering evaluation.
- Participate in software design reviews, code reviews, technical discussions, sprint planning, and other engineering team activities.
- Collaborate with software, electrical, mechanical, systems, RF, and other engineers to understand system requirements and support integrated development.
- Research new software technologies, libraries, frameworks, development tools, and engineering approaches applicable to current projects.
- Prepare and maintain technical documentation, including software requirements, architecture and design documentation, test procedures, development notes, and engineering reports.
- Learn and apply good software engineering practices related to maintainability, modularity, reliability, cybersecurity, configuration management, and reproducibility.
Qualifications:
- Pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Proficiency in at least one programming language, such as C, C++, or Python.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
- Understanding of fundamental software development principles and practices.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Coursework or project experience using Python, C, C++, Java, Rust, JavaScript/TypeScript, or another programming language.
- Familiarity with Git or another version control system through coursework, personal projects, or collaborative development.
- Experience using Linux, the command line, or a Unix-like development environment.
- Exposure to software testing concepts such as unit testing, automated testing, debugging, or test-driven development.
- Familiarity with Docker, containers, Kubernetes, cloud computing, or similar technologies.
- Exposure to DevOps, CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, or software deployment concepts.
- Experience developing software that communicates with hardware, sensors, microcontrollers, embedded systems, networks, APIs, or other software services.
- Familiarity with data structures, algorithms, object-oriented programming, software architecture, networking, operating systems, databases, or other core computer science concepts.
- Experience working on a collaborative technical project using tools for source control, issue tracking, documentation, or project management.
- Personal software projects, GitHub repositories, hackathon projects, engineering club participation, undergraduate research, robotics projects, or other hands-on technical work.
- Interest in aerospace, defense, embedded systems, artificial intelligence and machine learning, RF systems, distributed systems, DevOps, cybersecurity, or other mission-oriented engineering technologies.
Curiosity and willingness to learn unfamiliar technologies, tools, and engineering disciplines.
This is a paid internship opportunity with both full-time and part-time schedules available. Summer interns typically work full-time, with opportunities for part-time work during the academic year based on business needs and intern availability. Start and end dates are flexible based on the intern's academic schedule.
The internship provides the opportunity to gain hands-on experience working on real aerospace and defense engineering programs and may provide a pathway to future employment opportunities with Bascom Hunter.
