Job DetailsJob Location: Austin ReStore Admin Office - Austin, TX 78704Position Type: Part TimeSalary Range: $20.00 - $20.00 HourlyJob Category: ReCreateItThe ReCreateIt Gigalab Technician is responsible for supporting the collection, processing, and conversion of waste plastics into usable products through Gigalab manufacturing systems. The position operates and maintains recycling and 3D printing equipment, develops and prototypes products, tracks production and sustainability metrics, supports volunteer engagement, and helps ensure safe, efficient, and organized laboratory operations. The role contributes directly to waste diversion, product development, and community sustainability initiatives.
Plastic Shredding & Preparation
- Assist in collection, sorting, cleaning, and shredding waste plastic materials to prepare for 3D printing.
- Monitor and maintain granulation equipment to ensure proper functionality and safety.
- Work with the rest of the research team to identify and test different types of plastics for optimal system performance.
3D Printing & Prototyping:
- Operate 3D printer to create usable products from recycled plastic flakes.
- Monitor 3D printing processes, ensuring quality control, proper layering, and material consistency.
- Model functional parts in CAD software to be printed and sold
Data Collection & Analysis
- Record and track material inputs, print results, and product outcomes for analysis.
- Provide feedback and suggestions for improving hardware, recycling, and manufacturing processes.
- Maintain training, plastic waste reuse, and sales reports.
Sustainability & Outreach
- Participate in brainstorming sessions to develop new product ideas and solutions that promote sustainability and community.
- Coordinate and lead training sessions with volunteers.
- Assist with research on alternative sustainable materials and techniques to improve product offerings.
- Represent the project in relevant spaces, seeking partnerships with local entities to help further mitigate waste and solve problems
Lab Maintenance & Safety
- Help maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
- Ensure all safety protocols are followed while operating machinery and handling
QualificationsMinimum Experience & Education Requirements
- A passion for sustainability, recycling, or manufacturing processes.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think creatively.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
Preferred Experience & Qualifications
- Enrolled in a degree program (or recently graduated) in Manufacturing, Applied Technologies, Engineering, Materials Science, Public & Social Service, Environmental Science, Conservation, Sustainability, Business or related field.
- Basic understanding of 3D printing technologies (experience with 3D printers is a plus).
- Familiarity with CAD software or design tools, namely basic slicing software skills and OnShape modeling software suite
