Job Summary:
The EDM Wire Machinist / Programmer is responsible for programming, setting up, and operating Wire EDM machines to manufacture precision components used in medical devices. This role requires a high level of technical expertise in EDM programming, blueprint interpretation, and precision machining while maintaining strict adherence to quality standards, regulatory requirements, and documented procedures required in a contract medical device manufacturing environment. The machinist will work closely with engineering, quality, and production teams to ensure parts are manufactured accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with all customer specifications and regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Program Wire EDM machines using CAM software and machine controls to produce precision medical device components.
- Perform complete machine setup including fixturing, wire selection, dielectric setup, and tooling.
- Develop and optimize machining strategies to achieve tight tolerances and superior surface finishes.
- Perform first-article setups and adjustments to ensure dimensional accuracy.
- Operate Wire EDM machines safely and efficiently to produce parts that meet blueprint and customer requirements.
- Monitor machine performance and make necessary adjustments to maintain process stability and quality.
- Maintain appropriate wire tension, flushing parameters, and cutting conditions for optimal machining performance.
- Read and interpret complex engineering drawings, GD&T, and customer specifications.
- Verify part dimensions using precision measuring equipment such as micrometers, calipers, indicators, and optical inspection equipment.
- Complete required production documentation including travelers, inspection reports, and electronic manufacturing records.
- Identify opportunities to improve machining efficiency, cycle time, and process reliability.
- Collaborate with engineering on tooling improvements and process development.
- Assist with new product introductions and prototype builds.
- Perform routine preventative maintenance on EDM equipment including wire path cleaning, dielectric filtration, and system calibration checks.
- Report machine issues and coordinate repairs with maintenance personnel.
- Follow all safety procedures including PPE requirements and machine guarding standards.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area in accordance with 5S principles.
- Support the company’s safety culture and participate in safety training and meetings
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience operating and programming Wire EDM machines in a precision manufacturing environment.
- Strong understanding of EDM machining principles and cutting parameters.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and GD&T.
- Experience with CAM software and machine programming for EDM operations.
- Proficiency using precision measurement tools and inspection equipment.
