Under general supervision, the Mechanical Engineering Designer drafts changes to engineering drawings on computer using 3D CAD software (preferably SolidWorks) for changes as needed by Manufacturing for problem resolution. Corrects Bill of Materials (BOM) with each drawing change and assigns new part numbers as needed.
Essential Functions of the Job:
- Examines defective or incorrect parts as indicated by manufacturing personnel. Observes weldments and actual parts fittings through on-site, self-observation to determine best possible solution. Determines materials to be used and changes required.
- Designs and drafts changes to detail drawings of machinery and mechanical devices such as differences in dimensions, tolerances, fasteners, joining requirements, and exchange of materials used to existing product lines utilizing 3D software program. Submits drawing changes to supervisor for proper approval and authorization for implementation.
- May design and draft detailed drawings from actual parts of acquired product lines if no previous drawing exists.
- May assign or set-up new part numbers (PN's) by completing a part master input sheet and entering the data into the mainframe computer database as needed.
- May set-up or establish a new Bill of Materials (BOM) for each revised drawing(s) as required. Prints out computer reports including Bill of Materials for each drawing change completed and submits reports to supervisor.
- May coordinate Engineering software, PDM and MRP updates and implementations and troubleshoot problems with software. May provide support and training to team members.
- Receives calls from sales and parts offices regarding engineering drawings.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA’s):
- Able to read and technically interpret engineering drawings. Able to read and utilize engineering measuring tools and read and understand technical manuals. Able to create design layout(s) using provided specifications.
- Knowledgeable in 3-D wire frame construction, design layouts, assembly drawings and/or component part drawings required. Familiarity with hydraulic systems is preferred.
- Must be able to create accurate and complete Bill of Materials. Must be familiar with welding symbols. Machining knowledge is helpful.
- Excellent math skills including geometry and trigonometry. Excellent mechanical aptitude and good working mechanical vocabulary and understanding.
- Proficient computer skills including Word and Excel.
- Good communication skills, both verbal and written and able to write technical instructions for drawings and manuals.
- Able to organize and prioritize work schedule, meet deadlines and work under pressure.
Education and Experience:
- Associate's degree in mechanical engineering or drafting preferred.
- Proficiency with SolidWorks or similar 3D software.
- Minimum 1-year previous design and drafting experience in a manufacturing or heavy industrial environment required.
Working Conditions:
- Manufacturing setting.
- Frequent lifting and/or carrying items independently.
- Frequent standing and walking on concrete surfaces.
