The Role
Spend your summer making real medtech labs safer, smarter, and better documented. As a Lab Operations & Safety Intern, you’ll help advance how our labs are run and documented — from policies and SOPs to safety data and day-to-day practice. This is a hands-on role with genuine ownership: you’ll draft clear, usable documentation, benchmark how we work against industry standards, and turn what you find into prioritized recommendations the team can act on.
The role sits within IT & Incubation and works closely with our Lab Operations and EHS (Environmental Health & Safety) leads, giving you a rare cross-functional view of how a multidisciplinary medtech company actually operates. You’ll be supported with mentorship and regular check-ins throughout — you won’t be left to figure out safety-critical work alone.
Please note, this is a 12 week summer internship from July to August/September. You must be able to work onsite in our Boston, MA office at least 3 days a week. Relocation assistance is not available.
What You’ll Do
- Draft and propose revisions to LabOps policies and standard operating procedures (SOPs) — for review and approval by the EHS lead / Chemical Hygiene Officer before adoption
- Help review and maintain our Safety Data Sheet (SDS) library and Chemical Hygiene Plan documentation — checking entries for currency and completeness and flagging gaps for EHS to resolve (SDS content is always sourced from manufacturers or our authoritative SDS system, never created)
- Research and recommend lab best practices, benchmarking our approach against industry and regulatory standards (e.g., OSHA HazCom, GHS, ISO, cleanroom standards)
- Review how our documentation maps to day-to-day practice and recommend ways to keep the two aligned and streamlined as the team grows — escalating any observed safety concern to EHS rather than adjudicating it
- Synthesize findings into clear, prioritized recommendations for the team
- Use company-approved AI tools to speed up research, drafting, and analysis — with every safety- or compliance-related output verified against the source and signed off by a qualified team member
Example Deliverables:
- Anchor deliverable: A practice-vs-documentation gap analysis with a prioritized plan to keep procedures and real-world workflow in sync
- A prioritized set of draft SOP and policy revisions in an agreed-upon area, reviewed and approved by EHS before adoption
- An SDS library review with recommendations and a list of flagged gaps
- A lab best-practices recommendation memo
(Scope will be agreed up front and right-sized to the internship — we’d rather you do a focused subset thoroughly and safely than spread thin.)
What We’re Looking For
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program (including community college / associate programs) — or a recent graduate or career-changer with relevant coursework — in chemistry, biology, biomedical or chemical engineering, environmental health and safety, lab science, industrial/operations engineering, or a related field
- Strong writing and documentation skills, with genuine attention to detail
- A safety-first mindset and curiosity about how labs run
- Comfort using AI tools, paired with the judgment to verify their output rather than trust it blindly
- Organized and able to manage your own tasks, with mentorship and regular check-ins along the way
- Comfortable working in and around active lab spaces and wearing required PPE (provided)
- A plus, not a requirement — and a great place to learn them: any exposure to SDS/GHS, OSHA Hazard Communication, ISO, or cleanroom standards
If you’re excited about this role but don’t meet every qualification, we encourage you to apply anyway — we evaluate candidates on their whole profile.
Onboarding & Safety
Before any lab access, you’ll complete Triple Ring’s lab safety orientation, Hazard Communication training, and a PPE / Chemical Hygiene Plan review. All safety- and compliance-related work you produce is reviewed and approved by the EHS lead — you’ll never be the final sign-off on safety determinations.
When you use approved AI tools, they may help you draft, summarize, and organize — but they are never used to generate or infer SDS content, GHS classifications, exposure limits, or regulatory citations. That information always comes from manufacturer SDS and authoritative regulatory sources, verified by a qualified team member.
What You’ll Get
- Real ownership of projects whose recommendations can shape how our labs operate
- Mentorship from our IT & Incubation, Lab Operations, and EHS teams, and exposure to how a multidisciplinary medtech development company operates
- A genuine cross-functional view spanning IT, operations, safety, and lab science in a single role — plus exposure to the Intersect™ incubator community
