Full job description
Technique is looking for a Robotic Welding Technician / Programmer to join our team at our defense weld assembly plant in lower Michigan. This position operates and programs robotic MIG/TIG welding cells supporting defense-program weld assemblies. Team members progress through two competency tiers, each building on the prior level’s skill set, taking on increasing responsibility for robot programming, fixture setup, troubleshooting, and process improvement. Because this facility supports defense contracts, export-control and facility-security considerations apply alongside standard hiring practices.
The ideal candidate brings a minimum of 2 years of industrial welding experience, competency in Prototype Welding Technician Level 2 functions, and hands-on experience with at least one of the Motoman, Panasonic, or Fanuc robot controllers. PLC screen navigation, GD&T fluency, and the ability to troubleshoot builds using CMM reports are critical factors in this role. For Level 2, verifiable offline programming experience (RoboGuide, RobotStudio, or equivalent) and independent CMM-driven troubleshooting are required.
Responsibilities:
Troubleshoot from CMM reports – Understand CMM reports and troubleshoot builds using CMM report data (Level 1).
Recover robot from faults – Recover the robot from fault conditions and restart the program (Level 1).
Adjust points and parameters – Adjust robot points and welding parameters to maintain weld quality (Level 1).
Change programs from the PLC screen – Select and change programs from the PLC screen to support production changeovers (Level 1).
Apply intermediate GD&T – Apply an intermediate understanding of GD&T to prints, layouts, and inspections (Level 1).
Change out fixtures – Change out welding fixtures to support job and program changeovers (Level 1).
Run and adjust robotic welders – Demonstrate advanced ability to run and adjust robotic welders, including harmonizing, timing, and setup of new fixtures (Level 2).
Prepare jobs with offline programming – Utilize offline programming (OLP) software to prepare jobs (Level 2).
Apply advanced GD&T – Apply an advanced understanding of GD&T to prints, layouts, and inspections (Level 2).
Drive process improvements – Independently interpret CMM reports, troubleshoot builds, and drive process improvements to achieve a good first piece (Level 2).
Requirements:
High School Diploma or GED; vocational or technical trades training a plus
Minimum of 2 years of industrial welding experience (required for both levels)
Competency in Prototype Welding Technician Level 2 functions
Hands-on experience with at least one of the following robot controllers: Motoman, Panasonic, or Fanuc
Demonstrated PLC screen navigation and program selection
For Level 2: verifiable offline programming experience (RoboGuide, RobotStudio, or equivalent) and independent CMM-driven troubleshooting
Basic-to-advanced GD&T fluency, matched to the level under consideration
Ability to frequently lift and/or move items over 50 pounds
This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing throughout the shift
Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
Comfortable working in a manufacturing environment with exposure to fumes or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals, moving mechanical parts, industrial equipment, vibration, and loud noise
No travel expected for this position
Must be eligible to work in the United States; U.S. Person status may be required for ITAR/export-control purposes
May be subject to facility access badging, drug screening, or background check requirements specific to defense contracts
Position Type and Expected Hours:
This is a full-time, non-exempt position with a minimum of 40 hours per week with overtime as needed. Note: days, hours, and shifts required may vary. This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
