Full job description

Build your career in one of Saskatchewan’s newest and most exciting industries - rare earth elements!

Rare earth elements (REEs) power technologies such as electric vehicles, renewable energy, and advanced electronics. Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC) is at the forefront of building the REE industry right here in Saskatchewan and we’re looking for a Main Control Room (MCR) Operator to be part of operating our Rare Earth Processing Facility.

The role is responsible for real-time process monitoring, alarm response, field coordination, startup and shutdown support, and safe, stable operation across assigned areas. The MCR Operator utilizes a fully digitized SCADA environment to control the Monazite Processing Unit (MPU), the hydrometallurgical plant, and the Solvent Extraction Unit (SXU). SRC will fully train the operations team on the process, SCADA system, operating procedures, safety requirements, emergency response, and unit-specific qualification requirements. This role will require shift work as the facility functions under 24/7 operations.

Why SRC?

With more than 400 employees, $83 million in annual revenue and nearly 80 years of RD&D experience, the Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC) is Canada’s second largest research and technology organization with 1,400 clients in 16 countries around the world. We help clients from across the world solve technology problems, make improvements, seize opportunities, maintain competitiveness, increase productivity, and develop new markets.

SRC also offers many other benefits such as flexible retirement and savings options, insured benefits, professional development opportunities, a robust safety program, and an outstanding team environment.

Accountabilities

  • Support commissioning, startup, shutdown, ramp-up, and normal operations
  • Operate the MPU and SXU using SCADA and related plant interfaces
  • Monitor alarms, trends, interlocks, equipment status, inventories, and process performance
  • Adjust process variables within approved limits to support safety, stability, quality, recovery, and throughput
  • Coordinate Field Operators for checks, line-ups, sampling, starts, stops, isolations, and return-to-service
  • Troubleshoot abnormal conditions, stabilize the process, and escalate issues to shift leadership
  • Maintain accurate logs, operating records, and shift handovers
  • Monitor site security feeds, including monitor traffic arriving and leaving the site
  • Act as the central point of contact for various operating groups throughout the facility
  • Promote safety, environmental responsibility, procedural compliance, and continuous improvement

Qualifications

  • Operational experience in mining processing, chemical processing, utilities, metallurgical, or equivalent industrial facilities is an asset
  • Post secondary education in chemistry, automation, instrumentation, process operations, metallurgy, chemical technology, process engineering, or a related field is an asset. A combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Control room experience or experience with a Distributed Control System (DCS) or SCADA is an asset
  • Ability to work rotating 24/7 shifts is required

Skills

  • Strong commitment to safety
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to follow procedures and operating rules
  • Clear communication, sound judgment, and ability to stay calm under changing facility conditions
