Department: Operations
Location: DJ Basin, CO
Reports to: Automation Foreman
Salary Range: $110,000 - $130,000

Job Summary
Prairie Operating Company is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Automation Lead to join our operations team in the DJ Basin (Weld County, Colorado area). This critical leadership role will drive the design, implementation, optimization, and maintenance of automation, SCADA, and control systems across our oil and gas production assets. The ideal candidate will focus on minimizing LOE (Lease Operating Expenses), maximizing uptime, enhancing safety, and supporting scalable production growth in our Niobrara and Codell formations.
Reporting directly to the Automation Foreman, you will lead a team of technicians and specialists while collaborating closely with field operations, vendors, and contractors to deliver reliable, efficient automation solutions that directly impact production and profitability.

Key Responsibilities
•  Lead the strategy, architecture, and continuous improvement of automation systems, including SCADA, PLCs, RTUs, flow computers, HMI interfaces, and related instrumentation.
•  Oversee installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, Workover Rigs, and optimization of automation on well pads, SWDs, meters, valves, and other production equipment.
•  Maintain and implement standards for data acquisition, remote monitoring, alarming, and reporting to support real-time decision-making and predictive maintenance.
•  Manage automation projects from concept to execution, including budgeting, vendor selection, contractor oversight, and integration with existing infrastructure.
•  Troubleshoot complex issues and drive root-cause analysis to minimize downtime.
•  Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements (e.g., BLM calibration frequencies), safety standards, and environmental best practices.
•  Mentor and develop automation technicians; support in-house expertise growth for cost optimization and knowledge retention.
•  Collaborate on LOE reduction initiatives through automation efficiencies, bulk procurement strategies, and technology upgrades.
•  Maintain documentation, training materials, and knowledge transfer for field teams.
•  Stay current with emerging technologies in oilfield automation and recommend innovative solutions.

Qualifications
•  5+ years of progressive experience in oil & gas automation, controls, and SCADA systems (DJ Basin or similar unconventional experience preferred).

•  Strong expertise with PLC programming, SCADA platforms, RTUs, flow computers, and industrial networks (Modbus, Ethernet, etc.).
•  Proven leadership experience managing teams, projects, and contractors.
•  Hands-on knowledge of production equipment such as Facility Equipment, Fisher valves, gas meters, and electrical systems.
•  Familiarity with regulatory compliance, including BLM gas meter calibration and DP measurement best practices.
•  Excellent problem-solving skills with a track record of resolving persistent field issues.
•  Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to field locations in Colorado.
