ABOUT US

When a five-year-old boy was blinded after a regular eye exam failed to spot a retinal detachment, his father made it his life’s work to help eye care professionals by revolutionising retinal imaging. Optos was founded by Douglas Anderson in 1992 with the goal to make a patient-friendly device to quickly capture the entire retina.

The experience of Douglas Anderson is a thread that runs through the company to this day and has resulted in our products being used in nearly 20,000 locations globally. Optomap® shows up to 82% (200°) of the retina in a single-capture, offering unrivalled clarity and Optos is proud to be recognised as the leader in this field.

ROLE SUMMARY

We are seeking a talented Senior Software Engineer to join our Research and Development department, based in Dunfermline. In this role, you will play a key role in the development and enhancement of Optos' clinical data workflow and image management solutions. Working primarily in C#, you will contribute to the design, development and maintenance of software that enables clinicians to securely review, annotate, refer and archive retinal images and clinical data.

You will be involved throughout the software development lifecycle, with a particular focus on user interface and application layer development, as well as integration with Optos' image and metadata delivery platform. Working within an Agile environment, you will collaborate closely with Product Management, Software Development and DevOps teams to deliver high-quality, reliable software for the medical eyecare sector.

This is a highly technical role that combines hands-on software development with cross-functional collaboration, helping to shape the future direction of innovative healthcare technology solutions while ensuring the delivery of robust, scalable and compliant software.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Requirements Capture and Analysis

  • Work closely with stakeholders to understand, analyse and document technical requirements, ensuring solutions align with business and user needs.
  • Translate high-level system and product requirements into clear, actionable software development tasks.
  • Contribute to the creation of robust technical specifications that are clear, unambiguous and testable.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define technical approaches and support the successful delivery of new features and enhancements.
  • Provide guidance and support to junior engineers in requirements analysis and solution design.

Software

  • Design, develop and maintain high-quality software solutions, ensuring they are scalable, reusable and maintainable.
  • Develop new features and enhance existing functionality using C# and associated technologies, following established coding standards and best practices.
  • Define and implement integrations with internal and external systems, working collaboratively with other development teams.
  • Contribute to the design and delivery of user-focused applications, including workflows, user interfaces and user experience improvements.
  • Participate in all stages of the software development lifecycle, from design and development through to deployment and support.
  • Write and maintain unit tests and support continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD) processes.
  • Conduct peer code reviews, sharing knowledge and promoting high development standards across the team.
  • Mentor and support less experienced engineers, fostering technical excellence and continuous improvement.

Software Quality

  • Ensure software solutions are robust, well-structured and developed in line with quality standards and best practices.
  • Identify opportunities for code improvement and refactoring to enhance performance, maintainability and long-term sustainability.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose and resolve software defects, performance issues and system faults across development, testing and production environments.
  • Collaborate with Quality Assurance and DevOps teams to ensure the delivery of reliable, high-quality software.
  • Support manual and automated testing activities as required, ensuring solutions meet functional and non-functional requirements.
  • Promote a culture of quality through peer reviews, constructive feedback and adherence to development standards.
  • Ensure all development activities comply with Optos' Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC), ISO 13485 and FDA Medical Device Design Control requirements.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

  • Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent commercial experience.
  • Extensive software development experience, including at least 7 years developing applications using C#/.NET within a Windows environment.
  • Proven experience developing and supporting full-stack web and desktop applications using Microsoft technologies.
  • Strong knowledge of ASP.NET, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Experience developing software across multiple platforms, including Windows, web browsers and mobile-enabled environments.
  • Strong understanding of software development best practices, including testing, code reviews and source control.
  • Experience working within Agile software development teams.

Desirable

  • Experience working with DICOM and non-DICOM medical imaging formats, including image visualisation and rendering technologies.
  • Knowledge of DICOM communications, Web DICOM (DICOM-RS) and RESTful web APIs.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing and modern software delivery practices.
  • Experience with cloud-based development, testing, deployment and automation.
  • Working knowledge of Python, JavaScript, C/C++, VB, and SQL.
  • Experience developing software for regulated environments, particularly medical devices.
  • Experience performing unit and component testing.
  • Familiarity with development tools such as GitHub, Jira and Jenkins.
  • Experience delivering complex software projects in a fast-paced Agile environment.

Optos was founded by Douglas Anderson with the goal to make a patient-friendly device to capture a digital ultra-widefield image of the retina. Today, millions of patients around the world have benefited from optomap® retinal imaging. You will find optomap systems in many independent High Street optometrists, as well as eye clinics at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London and Harvard Medical Center in Massachusetts. Our core products produce high resolution optomap images of 82% or 200◦ of the retina, something no other imaging device is capable of in a single comfortable capture. The most recent innovation from Optos integrates ultra-widefield retinal imaging and image-guided Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). This combined device facilitates the early detection, management and effective treatment of disorders and diseases evidenced in the retina such as retinal detachments and tears, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and age-related macular degeneration. More than 1,000 published and ongoing clinical trials as well as thousands of case studies and testimonials show the long-term value of optomap imaging and OCT in diagnosis, treatment planning, and patient engagement. As a division of Nikon Co. Ltd, Japan since 2015, Optos is approaching its 30th anniversary and proud to be recognized as a leading provider of devices to eye care professionals to provide a more complete approach to patient care.
