Responsibilities

The Nurse coordinates a weekly on-site psychiatric clinic and manages medication refills and deliveries for high-risk adult males. They provide clinical support, develop wellness plans, and educate staff and clients on mental health and cognitive challenges.

Requirements

Candidates must have a Nursing degree, current registration in Alberta, and valid CPR and First Aid certification. Preferred qualifications include clinical experience in psychiatric mental health and knowledge of the Criminal Code of Canada regarding mentally disordered offenders.

Position Summary: 

101st Street Apartments is a Community Based Residential Facility (CBRF) funded by the Correctional Service of Canada (C.S.C) and operated by enCompass. The CBRF works with high-risk adult males, with various psychiatric disorders and physical disabilities, who are on release in the community, under the authority of The Parole Board of Canada.

Our goal is to assist and support clients in their transition from incarceration to community living. The Nurse is part of a Case Management Team (CMT) that directly oversees client care, risk and well-being. The Nurse is responsible for coordinating a weekly on-site Psychiatric clinic, coordinating medication refills and deliveries, contributing to client care to ensure clients take their medications as prescribed and providing both staff and clients with learning opportunities to increase their knowledge surrounding different mental health, cognitive and dual diagnosis challenges and best ways to support clients. 

Responsibilities:-

 

Administration:

  • Completion of accurate written daily documentation (log entries, contact notes, incident reports, medication book entries)

Client Support:

  • Participate in weekly clinics (with the client), case conferences, unit meetings, and individual client meetings as required.
  • Develop wellness plans as required.
  • Adapt services to meet the needs of diverse populations as per unit policy

Health and Safety:

  • To provide the best possible service in terms of support, risk management and community referrals for each resident.
  • Communicate pertinent information to supervisor and other staff as necessary

Community Engagement:

  • Maintain positive relationships with the Pharmacy, FACS, CSC program and healthcare staff. 

Agency Collaboration:

  • Participate in agency activities and meetings and support colleagues as needed
  • Value differences amongst coworkers
  • Contributes to overall agency mission, vision, and values
  • Contribute to a positive culture by assisting and supporting colleagues as needed and encourage and teach others about the unit’s operations
  • Contribute to the teaching and training of new staff and clients in relation to psychiatric illness, medical treatments and psychopharmacology

Qualifications / Skills:

 

Critical Criteria: 

  • Must have valid CPR and First Aid Certificate
  • Current Nursing Registration in the Province of Alberta
  • Degree in Nursing or Psychiatric Nursing
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary treatment team

Preferred Criteria: 

  • Previous clinical experience in psychiatric mental health nursing with knowledge, skill and ability in assessments, treatment and evaluation of clients.
  • Broad knowledge of mental health assessment and psychopharmacology
  • Knowledge and skills relating to crisis intervention and ability to apply non-violent crisis intervention
  • Experience and knowledge of the care and treatment of clients with dual diagnosis
  • Broad knowledge of the care and treatment of common chronic physical illnesses and disabilities
  • Comprehensive knowledge base of major mental health disorders and treatments
  • Knowledge of relevant health care legislation and the Criminal Code of Canada, as it pertains to mentally disordered offenders

Conditions of Employment:

  • Required to work 20–24 hours per week during daytime hours.
  • Must be available to work Wednesdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • A Clear Criminal Record Check, and Enhanced Reliability Check are required for this position. A criminal record will not disqualify you from employment with enCompass, we evaluate each application individually
