Requirements

Candidates should have a Bachelor's degree in Engineering and 1-3 years of experience in solar and battery system design. Proficiency in AutoCAD and PVSyst, along with a fundamental understanding of electrical systems, is required.

Full job description

About the Role

The Origination Engineer is the technical engine behind MEI's proposals, designing photovoltaic solar and battery energy storage systems, running energy models, and providing the inputs that drive capital expenditure estimates. Working at the intersection of design, engineering, and commercial origination, this role translates site-level analysis into constructable, value-optimized designs that move deals forward.

This person partners closely with Origination, Estimating, Project Engineering, and M&A to ensure every proposal is technically sound, clearly communicated, and positioned to win.

What You'll Own

  • System Design & Layout — Create solar PV and BESS designs using AutoCAD, Helioscope, and other design software; assess equipment placement, optimal row spacing, orientation, and site accessibility based on desktop analysis, industry standards, and past experience
  • Energy Modeling — Run energy modeling simulations, including 3D renderings of PV systems and surrounding objects, to model shading and validate system performance assumptions
  • Equipment Selection — Select major equipment for each site and evaluate new equipment entering the market to inform design decisions and maintain competitive positioning
  • Value Engineering — Identify value engineering opportunities within designs and collaborate with Origination and Estimating to quantify and capture savings
  • Proposal Support — Partner with the Origination team to integrate design details, project risks, and construction approaches into customer-facing proposals
  • Design Handoff & Documentation — Create design packages for handover to the Project Engineering team as projects reach exclusivity; ensure documentation is complete and constructable
  • M&A Technical Review — Support the Mergers & Acquisitions team by reviewing site due diligence, preliminary designs, and permit-level plans from other developers
  • Cross-Functional Coordination — Work closely with Origination, Development, Estimating, Commercial Analysis, Project Engineering, Project Managers, M&A, and QA/QC to ensure proposal design packages are efficiently laid out and constructable

What Will Help You Succeed

(You don't need to check every box, but here's what will help you thrive.)

  • Education — Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Electrical preferred; Mechanical, Civil, and Energy Engineering backgrounds have also been successful in this role), or equivalent education and experience
  • Experience — 1–3 years of experience designing solar and battery systems, or similar design experience using AutoCAD
  • Design Tools — Proficiency with AutoCAD and PVSyst (or similar energy modeling software)
  • Technical Foundation — Fundamental knowledge of electrical systems and circuitry; understanding of how photovoltaic solar and battery energy storage systems are designed and constructed
  • Communication — Ability to clearly communicate design concepts, project risks, and technical ideas to both technical and non-technical colleagues — in conversation and on paper
  • Project Management — Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail and organization

Benefits

  • PTO and company holidays
  • Medical, dental, vision
  • Employer-paid short-term disability, long-term disability, life insurance
  • 401(k) and company match
  • Professional development stipend
  • Strong culture of collaboration, performance, and personal growth
$90,000 - $120,000 a year
The actual salary offered may vary depending on job-related factors including, but not limited to knowledge, skills, experience and location.
